Highlighting the Maldives’ growing stature within the global Islamic community, the Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), His Excellency Hissein Brahim Taha, paid a courtesy call on President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on 07th May 2025, at the President’s Office in Malé.
During the high-level meeting, President Muizzu conveyed his sincere appreciation for the OIC’s enduring support for the Maldives and its steadfast leadership in uniting and guiding member states. The President emphasized the Government’s continued commitment to working closely with the OIC to advance shared goals in areas such as education, religious harmony, and sustainable development.
In response, Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha lauded the Maldives for its active role and engagement within the OIC. He described the island nation as one of the most prominent and respected members of the organisation, acknowledging the commendable institutions the Maldives has developed in support of religious education, and social cohesion.
The Republic of Maldives has been a member of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) since 1974, actively participating in its initiatives aimed at fostering unity, development, and cooperation among Muslim-majority nations. The OIC, established in 1969, is the second-largest intergovernmental organisation in the world after the United Nations, comprising 57 member states. Its mandate includes promoting peace, safeguarding Islamic values, supporting economic development, and addressing issues affecting the Muslim world, including education, humanitarian aid, and the protection of Islamic heritage. The Maldives continues to uphold these shared principles through its active engagement in OIC-led programmes and forums.
The meeting underscored the spirit of partnership and mutual respect that characterizes the relationship between the Maldives and the OIC. Both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing cooperation, with a shared vision of fostering unity and prosperity across the Islamic world.
