Maldives Expo 2026 is expected to create new opportunities for local producers by linking island-based businesses and products more closely with the country’s tourism economy, Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said.
Speaking on a special PSM programme on preparations for the exhibition, Minister Saeed said this year’s event will feature a dedicated “Visitor Economy District,” designed to showcase the distinctive identities, skills and products of island communities. A total of 22 islands are expected to participate in the district, presenting locally produced goods and highlighting the economic potential of communities across the Maldives.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader efforts to ensure that the benefits of tourism reach a wider section of the population. Minister Saeed said a cabinet-level Visitor Economy Council has been established to strengthen the connection between tourism, local production and island development, with the government seeking to create greater economic opportunities from the more than two million tourists who visit the Maldives annually.
Tourism remains the main pillar of the Maldivian economy, supported by an internationally recognised resort sector spread across the country’s islands and atolls. The government is seeking to create stronger commercial links between resorts, tourism businesses and local producers so that more Maldivian products can enter the tourism supply chain. Such opportunities could provide local entrepreneurs, artisans and small businesses with access to a large and consistent market while allowing visitors to experience more products that reflect Maldivian culture and island communities.
Minister Saeed also highlighted the expansion of Authentic Maldives at the new terminal of Velana International Airport. In accordance with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge, the retail and promotional space has been increased to 100 square metres and is located in a prime area after passport control, providing Maldivian products with greater exposure to international travellers.
The expanded presence at the airport, together with Maldives Expo 2026, is expected to strengthen the visibility of locally produced goods and support the government’s objective of increasing the participation of Maldivian businesses in the tourism-driven economy.
The exhibition will also include international participation, with China, India and the United Arab Emirates allocated dedicated space. A Creative Economy District will also form part of the event. Minister Saeed said the participation of foreign exhibitors is expected to open additional opportunities for local producers, including business connections, market exposure and potential partnerships.
Through Maldives Expo 2026, the government aims to strengthen the relationship between tourism, island economies and local entrepreneurship, helping Maldivian producers gain wider market access while supporting sustainable economic development across the country.
