The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has begun issuing newly printed MVR 5 banknotes into circulation, strengthening the availability of one of the country’s most frequently used denominations as demand for cash continues across businesses and everyday commercial transactions.

The new consignment of MVR 5 notes was received by the Authority on 14 October 2026 and entered circulation from 15 October. The printing was undertaken as stocks of the MVR 5 denomination from the Ran Dhihafaheh banknote series declined, making additional supply necessary to meet continued demand within the Maldivian economy.

The new batch represents the first reprinting of the MVR 5 banknote since the denomination was initially introduced in 2017. The MMA routinely prints additional banknotes to ensure an adequate supply of currency in circulation, while also replacing notes that have become worn, damaged or otherwise unsuitable for continued use.

The MVR 5 denomination remains particularly important for businesses and consumers, given its frequent use in day-to-day commercial transactions. According to the Authority, comparatively few MVR 5 banknotes return through the banking system, resulting in continued demand for new notes. The MMA therefore supplies significant quantities of the denomination to commercial banks and the public each year.

The newly printed banknotes bear the signature of Maldives Monetary Authority Governor Ahmed Munawwar and are dated 31 July 2025, corresponding to 6 Safar 1447 AH.

A notable feature of the reprinted notes is the inclusion of the Maldivian Rufiyaa currency symbol on both sides of the banknote. On the front, the symbol appears alongside the numerical denomination in the upper-right corner, while on the reverse it is positioned alongside the denomination in the upper-left corner.

The issuance ensures continuity in the supply of lower-denomination currency and supports the smooth handling of cash transactions across the country’s retail, service and broader commercial sectors.
