The Maldives has participated in the 17th International Energy Forum Ministerial Meeting (IEF17) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, strengthening its engagement in international discussions on energy security, renewable energy investment and sustainable development.
The Maldives was represented at the high-level forum, held on 11 October, by State Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Dr Muaviyath Mohamed.
The International Energy Forum Ministerial Meeting brings together governments, energy-sector leaders and key stakeholders to discuss major developments affecting the global energy landscape. This year’s discussions placed particular emphasis on strengthening energy security while supporting sustainable economic development and the transition towards cleaner sources of electricity generation.
Participants held extensive discussions on maintaining reliable and sustainable energy supplies, reducing emissions through environmentally responsible electricity generation, and strengthening the resilience of national energy systems. The forum also examined approaches to mobilising long-term investment and financial assistance for the energy sector, an area of particular importance for developing and geographically dispersed island nations.
Discussions further highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation between energy service providers and consumers and ensuring that electricity and related services remain accessible, reliable and efficiently delivered to communities.
For the Maldives, energy security remains closely connected to the country’s unique geography. With communities distributed across numerous islands, the provision and maintenance of electricity infrastructure requires significant investment, careful planning and resilient energy systems capable of serving both densely populated urban areas and smaller island communities.
The Government has therefore prioritised strengthening the national energy sector through infrastructure development, improved resource capacity and increased investment in renewable energy. Expanding renewable electricity generation is also expected to help reduce dependence on imported fuels, strengthen long-term energy resilience and support more sustainable economic development.
Under the Government’s current energy objectives, the Maldives aims to increase the share of renewable energy to 33 percent by the end of 2028. Achieving the target would represent a significant expansion of clean-energy capacity across the country and support the Government’s broader efforts to improve energy security while reducing the environmental and economic pressures associated with conventional electricity generation.
Participation in IEF17 also provides the Maldives with an important platform to engage with international partners, energy-sector institutions and potential investors as the country seeks greater access to technology, expertise and financing for renewable-energy development.
