To enhance one of its most vital industries, the Maldives is intensifying efforts to modernize its fisheries sector with the support of the Saudi Fund for Development. The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources recently held high-level discussions with senior representatives from the Saudi Fund, focusing on boosting infrastructure projects that are key to sustaining and advancing the nation’s fishing communities.

The Ministry confirmed that the discussions centered around reinforcing existing projects funded by the Saudi Fund and identifying new avenues for collaboration to build capacity and improve operational efficiency across the fisheries sector. Officials emphasized the crucial role that the fisheries industry plays in the Maldivian economy and underlined the importance of continued investments to ensure its long-term resilience and sustainability.

Currently, eight major infrastructure projects are underway with the assistance of the Saudi Fund. These initiatives include the expansion of the harbour at the Kooddoo Fisheries Complex in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, a vital hub operated by the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO). Additionally, the projects aim to boost fisheries services across the nation by constructing ice plants on five islands and setting up cold storage facilities on two more islands, ensuring better preservation and quality of catch.

The visit by the Saudi Fund delegation not only highlights the strong development partnership between the Maldives and Saudi Arabia but also showcases the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening its traditional industries through strategic international cooperation. These efforts promise to enhance the livelihoods of local communities and support the sustainable growth of fisheries, a sector deeply intertwined with the Maldivian way of life.

As the Maldives continues to invest in modernizing its fisheries, visitors can look forward to experiencing the nation’s rich maritime heritage, fresh seafood offerings, and vibrant island culture, all deeply rooted in its centuries-old connection to the ocean.
