April 2025 has marked a powerful resurgence in international travel to the Maldives, recording the strongest tourism growth in the past three years. With 198,322 visitors arriving during the month, it stands as the highest number of arrivals ever registered in any April since official records began. This represents a sharp 17.8% increase compared to April 2024, when 168,366 tourists visited the country, and a remarkable leap from 164,357 in April 2023.
This performance is especially notable given April’s reputation as a quieter month in the annual tourism cycle, typically following the peak travel season of winter. In a year that has seen steady tourism recovery, April’s numbers not only outperformed the same month in previous years but also surpassed even March 2023, which saw 173,514 visitors. The average daily arrival rate this April climbed to 6,611 tourists per day, up from 5,612 in 2024 and 5,479 in 2023, reinforcing the growing interest in the Maldives as a preferred holiday destination.

According to data released by the Ministry of Tourism, the Maldives welcomed 851,531 tourists by 3 May 2025. This marks a 7.9% increase compared to the same period in 2024, which saw 788,983 arrivals. Compared to the 703,276 arrivals recorded by early May in 2023, this year’s performance reflects an impressive year-on-year growth of 21%. These trends suggest a robust and accelerating recovery in the tourism sector, bolstered by strategic marketing efforts and improved international air connectivity.
A deeper look at market distribution reveals that China remains the leading source market in 2025, contributing 95,692 visitors. Russia follows closely with 90,063, while the United Kingdom secures third place with 88,820. Italy and Germany also continue to provide strong numbers, highlighting the Maldives’ enduring appeal across Europe and Asia. Resorts continue to dominate accommodation choices, accounting for 70.7% of market share, while guesthouses captured 23.8%, reflecting the increasing diversity in visitor preferences and budget ranges.

The performance of April stands out even more when placed alongside the rest of the year’s monthly data. January 2025 recorded an 11.7% year-on-year increase, while February experienced a slight decline of 1.5%. March posted a moderate 4.8% growth. April’s robust 17.8% jump makes it the standout month of 2025 so far and hints at an upward trajectory that could set new annual records if sustained.
This remarkable increase in tourist arrivals during a traditionally slower period indicates not only a global resurgence in travel but also a renewed trust in the Maldives as a safe, attractive, and well-marketed destination. With international travel holidays aligning better with regional spring breaks and enhanced promotional campaigns reaching broader audiences, the Maldives is experiencing a steady return of visitor confidence.
If this momentum continues, the country may well be on course to surpass the two-million annual arrivals mark once again, a milestone that would affirm the Maldives’ reputation as one of the world’s most sought-after tropical destinations.
