To strengthen tourism development in the southern Maldives, His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially revised the geographic boundaries of Hoan’dedhdhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. This decision, formalized under Presidential Decree No. 10/2025, entails the separation of Kadevarehaa Island from Hoan’dedhdhoo’s administrative jurisdiction, creating new opportunities for targeted tourism initiatives in the Huvadhu Atoll region.

The adjustment, announced on 6th April 2025, Sunday, was made in accordance with Section 56(a) of the Decentralization Act (Act No. 07/2010), which authorizes the President to define the jurisdictions of City and Island Councils. The updated administrative delineation has now been documented and made publicly accessible via the Government Gazette Gazette.

This strategic realignment is part of President Muizzu’s broader commitment to unlock the economic potential of southern Maldives by facilitating integrated tourism development. By separating Kadevarehaa from Hoan’dedhdhoo, the government aims to streamline governance and pave the way for enhanced infrastructure, investment, and tourism projects tailored to the unique geographical and cultural characteristics of the region.

Located in the heart of the pristine Huvadhu Atoll, these islands boast crystal-clear lagoons, untouched marine ecosystems, and a rich cultural heritage, ideal for visitors seeking an authentic Maldivian experience. The newly designated jurisdiction is expected to attract interest from international resort developers and eco-tourism operators, further diversifying the Maldives’ tourism offerings beyond the central atolls.

With this move, the Maldives continues to strengthen its position as a world-class travel destination, while ensuring that development reaches the farthest corners of the nation’s island chain.
