The Maldives has welcomed its seventh cruise ship of the year, reinforcing the nation’s growing appeal as a premier destination for cruise tourism in the Indian Ocean. On 23 March 2025, the luxury cruise liner MS Crystal Symphony arrived in Malé with over 300 international tourists and 477 crew members, marking the ship’s second visit to the Maldives this year.
Operated out of Colombo, Sri Lanka, the MS Crystal Symphony previously docked in the Maldives in January 2025, carrying more than 200 passengers and 300 crew on that occasion. This recurring visit highlights the country’s increasing relevance in regional cruise itineraries.
The Maldives has been seeing a steady increase in cruise arrivals in recent months. Earlier in March, the MS Zuiderdam also made a call to the archipelago, bringing 1,274 tourists and 751 crew members. Both vessels originate from Colombo, further emphasizing the strategic location of the Maldives within the South Asian maritime tourism circuit.
Tourism continues to be the backbone of the Maldivian economy, and the administration has amplified its commitment to expanding cruise tourism. As part of a broader initiative to diversify tourist access points, the government is actively developing three dedicated harbours in various regions of the country to better accommodate large vessels and ensure smooth disembarkation for cruise passengers.
These initiatives appear to be paying off. According to the Ministry of Tourism, over 588,484 tourists have visited the Maldives as of March 2025, marking a 4.8 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This upward trend is a testament to the country’s resilient tourism infrastructure and its continuous efforts to attract a wider demographic of international travellers.
The repeated visits of cruise liners and the rise in overall tourist arrivals are clear indicators of the Maldives’ growing status as a must-visit destination not only for luxury resort vacations but also for cruise-based exploration. With calm turquoise waters, world-renowned hospitality, and increasing accessibility via sea routes, the Maldives is steadily sailing into a vibrant new chapter of tourism growth.
