Kandima Maldives has launched its first on-island “Art for Biodiversity” Exhibition in celebration of Maldives Independence Day, introducing a season-long creative showcase that brings together Maldivian artistic talent, environmental awareness and sustainable tourism. The pilot project has been developed through the resort’s long-running KULA Art Initiative, a platform established to promote Maldivian creativity and connect local artists, craftspeople and emerging talents with opportunities across the country’s tourism industry.
Supported by a grant from the United Nations Development Programme, the exhibition will transform Kandima Maldives into an island-wide art trail throughout the summer. Travellers will be invited to explore works created by more than 20 Maldivian artists from across the atolls and the wider global Maldivian community, offering international visitors an engaging introduction to the country’s diverse creative identity.
The exhibition features a broad range of artistic mediums, including painting, digital art and installation pieces. The participating works also represent varied creative styles, from hyper-realism to abstraction, reflecting the depth, originality and evolving character of contemporary Maldivian art. A closing ceremony is scheduled for the latter half of September, marking the conclusion of the season-long exhibition and recognising the artists, partners and communities involved.
The initiative followed a global call for submissions earlier in the year and was open to artists from around the world. The selected works are united by themes of biodiversity, conservation and ocean ecology, using visual storytelling to highlight the importance of protecting the Maldives’ natural environment. Further information about the shortlisted artists, individual artworks and additional collaborations with creative talents is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Located in Dhaalu Atoll, Kandima Maldives offers a contemporary island experience that combines recreation, creativity, wellness, dining and entertainment within a spacious tropical setting. The resort’s expansive natural surroundings, extensive coastline and proximity to rich marine ecosystems provide an appropriate setting for an exhibition focused on biodiversity and ocean conservation. By positioning artworks across the island, the resort is enabling visitors to experience Maldivian creativity as part of their wider holiday journey rather than limiting the exhibition to a conventional gallery space.
The exhibition also seeks to strengthen the connection between the tourism sector and the Maldivian creative economy. By incorporating local fine art into the tourism value chain, the project is intended to develop a scalable biodiversity-financing model that can create commercial opportunities for artists while supporting environmental and community initiatives.
A central objective of the programme is to provide high-visibility exposure for established and emerging Maldivian artists, connecting their work with an international audience and the premium tourism market. This approach can help local creators build professional networks, access new buyers and gain greater recognition among travellers, hospitality operators and international creative communities.
The initiative is also designed to generate funding for local conservation efforts, with proceeds dedicated to the Dhaalu Valla conservation area and community-led projects. Through this structure, artistic engagement is linked directly with environmental protection and community empowerment, enabling visitors and collectors to support meaningful conservation activities through their participation.
Kandima Maldives aims to demonstrate how creative tourism can contribute to biodiversity financing through a model that may be replicated across the Maldives through future resort partnerships. The project supports the country’s positive direction in promoting responsible tourism, environmental stewardship, local talent development and broader community participation in the tourism economy.
The exhibition forms part of Kandima Maldives’ wider commitment to art and creative engagement through the KULA Art Initiative. Launched in 2017 alongside the opening of the resort, KULA operates throughout the year and includes the annually returning KULA Art Festival, artist residency programmes and activities at the KULA Art Studio. Guests are able to participate in painting classes and other creative sessions facilitated by a rotating group of resident artists, encouraging direct cultural interaction between visitors and creative professionals.
Kandima Maldives also maintains a dedicated KULA fund, financed through a contribution of USD 1 from every room night booked at the resort. The fund supports local schools and artists by providing equipment, internships, scholarships and opportunities for further education. This continuing investment has enabled the resort to establish art as an integral part of its tourism offering while extending practical benefits to Maldivian communities.
The launch of the “Art for Biodiversity” Exhibition during Maldives Independence Day celebrations highlights the country’s cultural identity, natural heritage and growing creative potential. By bringing together tourism, art, conservation and community development, Kandima Maldives is offering global travellers a deeper connection with the destination while supporting the Maldives’ continued progress as a responsible, innovative and culturally vibrant tourism destination.
