In order to expand the “Waqf Fund” operations and aid in the development and upkeep of mosques in the Malé region and atolls, the government has decided to construct a new Waqf building in Hulhumalé.
In a post made on X (former Twitter) last week, the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said that as President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to develop Mosque Fund, increase Waqf buildings and expand the fund, the foundation stone of the second Waqf Building of the Mosque Fund will be laid in Hulhumalé in January 2024.
Minister also stated that the existing Waqf Fund building (Daar-ul-Iman) generates about MVR 6 million annually and that this money is being spent on the repairment and renovation of mosques.
Daar-ul-Iman was developed on the advice of Dr. Shaheem in his former tenure as the Minister of Islamic Affairs during former President Abdulla Yameen’s presidential term.
