The development project at Velana International Airport (VIA), the main international airport serving the Maldives, will be finished in time for the busiest travel season of the following year, according to President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. This declaration was made on Thursday at the ceremony to launch the Resort General Managers’ Forum.
Speaking at the event at Bandos Maldives Resort, Dr. Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment to completing the VIA project on time, stressing that all parties involved in the tourism industry are concerned about the delays. The speaker expressed gratitude for the cooperative efforts of multiple stakeholders in the tourism sector, such as workers, resort operators, regional travel agencies, guesthouses, and the industry at large, in fostering the growth of the Maldives’ tourism industry.
Along with outlining some of the objectives linked to tourism in his presidential manifesto, Dr. Muizzu reiterated his commitment to working with all parties involved in the industry to ensure its continuous growth.
“To develop the tourism sector in the coming days, we will work with all those involved in the sector,” he said.
Dr. Muizzu made two promises during his presidential campaign: he would establish a retirement pension plan for tourism workers and give them apartments under the government’s social housing program.
