As they compete in the Billie Jean King Cup, the biggest women’s tennis tournament in the world, the national women’s tennis team of Maldives has made impressive strides. Teams are divided into various zones for the tournament.
Maldives has been placed in Group 3 of the Asia Oceania region and participated in the group matches held in Bahrain, competing against 14 teams, including several Middle Eastern countries, and secured the fifth position.
Thanks to the strong singles and doubles performances of Layaan Mohamed Shamin and Aara Aasal Azim, the Maldives defeated the tournament hosts Bahrain 3-0 in their opening match.
In their second match, the Maldives defeated Macao 2-1 thanks to a dominant singles victory. That being said, they lost the second singles match but won the doubles match.
Despite a few disappointments, such as losing 2-1 to Saudi Arabia and Laos, the national women’s team’s performance in the Billie Jean King Cup represents a major advancement in their tennis career. The Davis Cup, a men’s competition, is scheduled to begin in Bahrain on Tuesday. The Maldives is a member of Group 3 in the Asia Oceania Zone.
