The Maldives has invited Italian businesses to explore new investment opportunities across the country as the Government works to deepen trade, commercial and economic cooperation with Italy, building on six decades of strong diplomatic relations and longstanding people-to-people ties.
Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed extended the invitation while speaking at a ceremony commemorating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Italy, alongside celebrations marking Italy’s 80th National Day.
Minister Saeed highlighted the close relationship that has developed between the two countries since diplomatic ties were established in 1966, noting that Italy holds a particularly important place in the Maldives’ tourism story. Italian travellers and tourism pioneers were among those who helped introduce the Maldives to the international travel market during the early years of the industry.
He recalled the contribution of pioneers including George Corbin, whose efforts in the early 1970s helped present the Maldives to overseas visitors and supported the emergence of tourism as one of the country’s most important economic sectors. Over the decades, Italian travellers have continued to maintain a strong connection with the Maldives, attracted by its tropical islands, pristine beaches, rich marine environment and internationally recognised resort experiences.
Italy remains one of the Maldives’ leading tourism markets and currently ranks as the fifth-largest source market for visitor arrivals. Minister Saeed said the enduring relationship between the people of the two countries demonstrates the depth of the partnership, with Italy continuing to occupy a special position within the development and international growth of Maldivian tourism.
The Minister said the strong tourism relationship also provides a valuable foundation for broader economic cooperation. He encouraged Italian businesses and investors to consider opportunities in areas including technology, innovation and sustainable development, sectors that are becoming increasingly important as the Maldives advances its economic diversification agenda.
He highlighted Italy’s expertise and achievements in these fields as areas where greater collaboration could support new commercial partnerships, knowledge exchange and investment opportunities in the Maldives. The Government continues to promote an investor-friendly environment while expanding opportunities across emerging sectors alongside the country’s well-established tourism industry.
Minister Saeed also emphasised the importance of continued Maldives–Italy cooperation in addressing climate change, protecting marine ecosystems and strengthening engagement through international platforms. For the Maldives, safeguarding the ocean and natural environment remains closely linked to long-term economic resilience, particularly as tourism and island communities depend heavily on healthy marine ecosystems.
Marking 60 years of diplomatic relations, Minister Saeed said the partnership between the Maldives and Italy has developed on a strong foundation of trust, friendship and mutual respect. He expressed confidence that the next chapter of bilateral relations would bring greater investment, stronger commercial ties and new opportunities for shared prosperity between the two countries.
