Oaga Art Resort has successfully concluded The Shape of Return, a contemporary Maldivian art exhibition presented in collaboration with Oevaali Art Gallery in Singapore. Held from 21 June to 5 July 2026, the exhibition introduced international audiences to the works of 15 Maldivian artists, presenting compelling visual narratives centred on identity, memory, belonging and cultural heritage.

The exhibition reflected the shared commitment of Oaga Art Resort and Oevaali Art Gallery to creating meaningful international platforms for Maldivian artists and expanding global engagement with the country’s contemporary creative community. Presented within Oevaali Art Gallery’s intimate space dedicated to Maldivian fine art, The Shape of Return offered visitors an opportunity to explore the Maldives through artistic perspectives that extend beyond its globally recognised image of turquoise lagoons, white-sand beaches and tropical island landscapes.

Through painting, mixed media, illustration and visual storytelling, the exhibition presented the Maldives as a place shaped by generations of lived experiences, traditions, memories and evolving cultural identities. The works invited audiences to consider the relationships between people and place, the emotional significance of returning home, and the ways in which personal and collective memories contribute to a sense of belonging.

The artworks were originally commissioned as part of Maldives; A Simple Story, Oaga Art Resort’s wider creative narrative celebrating Maldivian history, culture and everyday life sense of belonging.

The artworks were originally commissioned as part of *Maldives. They were initially developed as individual installations within the resort’s Veyoge Gallery Villas, with each villa designed as an immersive living narrative inspired by distinct aspects of Maldivian identity and experience.

Their presentation in Singapore brought the works together within a single international gallery setting for the first time. Displayed collectively, the installations formed a contemporary artistic archive that demonstrated the diversity of Maldivian creative expression while highlighting the connections that unite the artists’ individual interpretations of home, heritage and memory.

Oaga Art Resort has developed its hospitality experience around art, storytelling and meaningful cultural engagement. Rather than presenting art solely as decoration, the resort integrates original Maldivian works into its guest environments, allowing visitors to encounter the country’s creative identity throughout their stay. Its Veyoge Gallery Villas serve as both accommodation spaces and artistic experiences, connecting guests with stories inspired by island communities, traditions, folklore and everyday Maldivian life.

This approach positions Oaga as a creative destination where contemporary hospitality is combined with cultural discovery. Through collaborations with Maldivian artists and the incorporation of locally developed narratives into its resort experience, Oaga provides guests with opportunities to form a deeper understanding of the Maldives and its people. The resort’s creative philosophy also supports local artistic talent by offering artists spaces in which their work can be viewed, experienced and shared with audiences from around the world.

The Shape of Return formed part of Oaga Art Resort’s broader participation in ILTM Asia Pacific Singapore, where representatives of the resort engaged with luxury travel advisors and industry partners from across the region. The exhibition expanded these professional engagements beyond the trade environment by demonstrating how art and cultural storytelling form an integral part of the Oaga guest experience.

Oaga also hosted private exhibition viewings at Oevaali Art Gallery for selected travel partners. These sessions provided participants with a deeper understanding of the resort’s creative philosophy and the artistic foundations of its hospitality narrative. By connecting discussions initiated at ILTM Asia Pacific with the artworks exhibited at the gallery, Oaga presented partners with a more immersive view of the cultural experiences available at the resort.

Visitors to the exhibition were also introduced to a miniature installation inspired by Oaga’s Veyoge Gallery Villas. The scaled presentation offered a glimpse into the distinctive environments in which the artworks were originally installed and demonstrated how architecture, interior design, visual art and storytelling are brought together within the resort.

Guests were further invited to participate in a Veyoge giveaway, extending their engagement beyond the gallery and introducing international audiences to the artistic accommodation experiences available at Oaga Art Resort. The initiative strengthened the connection between the Singapore exhibition and the original setting of the artworks in the Maldives.

Bringing together artists from a wide range of creative disciplines, The Shape of Return featured the works of Alwan Ibrahim, Hawwa Lahfa, Hidhana Latheef, Zifla Ibrahim, Zuha Bari, Hassan Niyaz, Aishath Shuaila, Mariyam Halym, Baburu Akuru x Jille, Dhyna Shaheem, Emaz Shakoor, Aminath Fathina, Afzal Shaafiu, also known as Afu, Mohamed Hisan and Aima Musthafa.

The participating artists presented varied interpretations of the relationship between individuals, communities and their surroundings. Their works explored how cultural identity is preserved, questioned and reimagined across generations, while demonstrating the growing diversity and confidence of contemporary Maldivian visual art.

“We have always envisioned Oaga as more than just a beach resort—it is an art platform; a destination where people can connect with the Maldives through creative and whimsical storytelling. It has been a joy to bring a glimpse of this to a global stage through the work of 15 local artists, and deeply moving to witness the connections formed through this exhibition. This is a milestone not just for Oaga, but for Maldivian contemporary art,” said Nawaila Nashid, Director of Brand Experience at Oaga Art Resort.

The conclusion of The Shape of Return on 5 July 2026 represents another important achievement in Oaga Art Resort’s continuing efforts to create valuable opportunities for Maldivian artists and strengthen international appreciation for the country’s contemporary creative voices. Through art, hospitality, storytelling and cultural exchange, the resort continues to present the Maldives as a destination with a rich and evolving cultural identity, offering global audiences new ways to understand and experience the island nation.
