Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa has celebrated the sixth anniversary of its collaboration with Reefscapers on February 19, 2026, highlighting sustained efforts to protect and restore the Maldives’ delicate coral reef ecosystems while strengthening the country’s position as a global leader in sustainable tourism. Since the partnership began in 2020, the resort and Reefscapers have worked closely to rehabilitate coral habitats, enhance marine biodiversity, and create immersive conservation experiences that allow guests to actively participate in environmental stewardship. The anniversary also marks one year since the successful relocation of approximately five tons of coral to the resort’s house reefs, representing one of the most significant conservation initiatives undertaken through the partnership.
Over the past six years, the collaboration has evolved into a central element of the resort’s sustainability strategy, combining scientific reef restoration with meaningful guest engagement. The initiative has resulted in the planting of 898 coral frames, supporting nearly 33,000 coral colonies now developing across designated restoration sites. Through structured coral propagation, continuous reef monitoring, and educational awareness programmes, the project continues to rebuild reef structures while fostering a deeper understanding of the critical role coral ecosystems play in sustaining marine biodiversity, supporting fisheries, and protecting island shorelines. Each growing coral frame reflects a long-term commitment to preserving the marine environment that underpins the Maldives’ global appeal as a premier ocean destination.
A significant achievement within the partnership has been the coral relocation project, which involved the careful transfer of coral colonies from Ras Malé, also known as the Maldives Eco City, to the resort’s dedicated restoration areas. The relocation safeguarded coral communities from potential environmental pressures associated with land reclamation activities in the Fushi Dhiggaru Lagoon. One year after the transfer, the corals continue to thrive beneath the waters surrounding the resort, contributing to reef resilience and reinforcing the ecological health of the surrounding marine environment. According to Katelyn, the resort’s Marine Biologist, observing the relocated corals settle and begin to grow has been especially rewarding for both the conservation team and returning guests who witness the visible progress of restoration efforts over time.
Central to the partnership is the resort’s Adopt a Coral programme, delivered as part of the Good Travel with Marriott Bonvoy initiative, which encourages travellers to engage with destinations in a responsible and purposeful manner. The programme offers guests the opportunity to adopt and name coral frames while learning directly from marine experts about coral ecology and the importance of protecting fragile marine habitats. By transforming visitors into active participants in conservation, the initiative strengthens awareness of environmental responsibility while creating memorable experiences grounded in education and sustainability.
The programme also extends beyond the guest stay, as participants receive updates every six months detailing the growth and development of their adopted corals. These updates allow guests to maintain an ongoing connection with the reef, turning a holiday experience into a lasting contribution to environmental preservation. As the corals continue to grow, they represent shared responsibility between the resort, its guests, and conservation partners, demonstrating how tourism can positively contribute to ecosystem restoration and community awareness.
Greg Allan, General Manager of Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa, noted that the island’s surrounding marine environment remains one of its greatest assets and a responsibility the resort takes seriously. He emphasised that the partnership with Reefscapers reflects a broader belief that hospitality and environmental stewardship must progress together, adding that the visible reef restoration achievements over the past six years and the participation of guests and associates have made the anniversary particularly meaningful for the entire resort community.
Through its ongoing collaboration with Reefscapers, Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa continues to advance marine conservation while offering purposeful travel experiences rooted in sustainability, education, and a deeper connection to nature. The resort’s sustained investment in reef restoration underscores the growing role of environmentally responsible hospitality in protecting the Maldives’ natural heritage while ensuring that future generations of visitors can continue to experience the country’s extraordinary marine ecosystems.
