Velana International Airport has recorded its highest-ever monthly transshipment cargo volume, strengthening the Maldives’ position as an emerging regional logistics and aviation hub, according to Maldives Airports Company Limited.

MACL reported that more than 2,000 tonnes of transshipment cargo were handled through the airport in July, surpassing all previous monthly records. The achievement reflects strong growth across both sea-to-air and air-to-air cargo operations and demonstrates the airport’s expanding ability to support international freight movements between major global markets.

Sea-to-air cargo operations alone reached 621 tonnes during the month, representing the highest monthly volume recorded since the service was introduced. The result highlights the increasing demand for efficient cargo transfer solutions through the Maldives, particularly for shipments arriving by sea and continuing to overseas destinations by air.

Velana International Airport’s strategic location along key international shipping and aviation routes provides significant potential for the Maldives to serve as an important cargo connection point between Asia, Europe and other regions. The continued growth of transshipment services is expected to create new opportunities for airlines, shipping operators, freight forwarders and logistics companies seeking reliable and time-efficient cargo solutions.

The latest record also reflects the continued development of the airport’s cargo-handling capacity, operational efficiency and international logistics services. Improvements in infrastructure, coordination and cargo-processing capabilities have enabled VIA to accommodate growing shipment volumes while maintaining efficient connections between maritime and aviation networks.

The Government’s continued focus on strengthening national aviation infrastructure and expanding international connectivity is supporting the development of Velana International Airport beyond its role as the country’s principal passenger gateway. The growth of cargo and logistics operations contributes to economic diversification, enhances trade connectivity and supports the Maldives’ long-term development as a competitive regional transport centre.

MACL said the strong performance demonstrates VIA’s increasing importance within the international logistics sector. With continued investment in airport infrastructure, cargo services and operational capacity, Velana International Airport is well positioned to attract additional transshipment business and further strengthen the Maldives’ connections with regional and global markets.
