The Maldives has reaffirmed its dedication to patient safety as a fundamental priority within its national health strategies, as highlighted by the Minister of Health, Abdulla Nazim, during his address at the 7th Global Ministerial Summit on Patient Safety, held in Manila, Philippines.
In his remarks to an international audience of ministers, healthcare professionals, and policy leaders, Minister Nazim outlined the Maldives’ ongoing commitment to ensuring that all health policies are built around the core principle of safeguarding patients. He emphasized that patient safety is not treated as an isolated concern but as an integral part of the country’s entire healthcare framework, especially within its primary healthcare system which serves as the first point of contact for the majority of the population.
Highlighting the Maldives’ progress and aspirations in the healthcare sector, Minister Nazim underscored the importance of integrating digital tools and emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to improve healthcare delivery and safety outcomes. He noted that these innovations are being considered to streamline medical procedures and reduce risks across the healthcare continuum.
The Minister also addressed the broader context in which the Maldives delivers healthcare services. As a low-lying island nation vulnerable to the effects of climate change, the Maldives faces unique challenges in building a health system that can withstand environmental pressures. He called attention to the importance of research and international collaboration in developing climate-resilient healthcare infrastructure that can continue to serve communities effectively in the face of environmental uncertainties.
The Global Ministerial Summit on Patient Safety, hosted by the Philippines’ Department of Health, brings together high-level representatives from around the world to accelerate progress on global health safety initiatives. This year’s summit focused on reviewing the implementation of the Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021–2030 and promoting stronger international cooperation to address ongoing and emerging healthcare challenges.
Held under the theme “Weaving Strengths for the Future of Patient Safety Throughout the Healthcare Continuum,” the summit offered a platform for nations to share best practices, evaluate progress, and reinforce partnerships aimed at embedding patient safety into the very foundation of national health systems.
