The number of tourist arrivals recorded in Maldives has reached over 1.7 million for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic.
The statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism shows that 34,919 tourists arrived in Maldives between 1st to 6th December 2023. This is a 5.7% increase over the 33,023 tourist arrivals recorded for the same period last year.
In addition to this, statistics show that an overall increase of 12.8% in tourist arrivals have been recorded for the year compared to the previous year. As of 6th December, Maldives has welcomed 1,718,766 tourists while last year, 1,524,275 tourist arrivals were recorded for this period. In 2023, Maldives has recorded an average of 5,146 tourist arrivals per day.
Furthermore, the statistics released by the Ministry also show that Russia is the leading tourist market this year with 194,602 arrivals recorded as of 6th December 2023. India comes in second on the list with 188,446 arrivals whereas China placed third with a total of 178,010 arrivals. Other countries that ranked in on the list of top 10 markets for 2023 are the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, USA, France, Spain and Switzerland respectively.
The busiest month for Maldives tourism this year was February, during which the country welcomed a whopping 177,915 visitors.
Maldives received its one millionth tourist arrival of the year on July 16 and is expected to reach its target of 1.9 million arrivals soon.
