The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has opened registrations for the MMA FinLit Fest 2026 Debate Competition, inviting students from high schools, colleges and universities across the Greater Malé region to demonstrate their critical thinking, public speaking and analytical skills while exploring important economic issues shaping the country’s future.

The competition forms part of MMA’s wider financial literacy efforts aimed at encouraging young people to become more informed, confident and responsible in understanding economic and financial matters. By combining structured debate with topics relevant to the economy and everyday financial decision-making, the initiative offers students an engaging platform to examine different perspectives, develop persuasive arguments and strengthen their ability to communicate ideas effectively.

Participants will compete in teams, with debates to be conducted in Dhivehi, creating an accessible environment for students to confidently discuss complex economic issues in the national language. The competition also gives young participants an opportunity to challenge ideas, defend their positions and gain valuable experience in research, teamwork and public communication.

Cash prizes of up to MVR 10,000 are available for successful participants, adding a competitive element to the educational programme while recognising outstanding performance and intellectual engagement.

The initiative reflects the growing national emphasis on strengthening financial awareness among younger generations and preparing students to make better-informed decisions as they enter higher education, employment, entrepreneurship and wider economic life. Promoting financial literacy among young people also contributes to the Government’s broader efforts to build a knowledgeable, financially capable and economically resilient population.

Registration for the MMA FinLit Fest Debate Competition was open until 31 October 2026 at 23:59 Maldives time. Participants were also encouraged to review the official participant guidebook and competition details before taking part.

Under the theme “Young Minds. Smart Choices. Better Financial Futures,” the competition provides an important platform for emerging voices to think critically, speak confidently and contribute to discussions on the economic issues that will influence the Maldives of tomorrow.
