Finolhu, a Seaside Collection Resort, has appointed Harry Green Longin as Marine Biologist, strengthening the resort’s long-term commitment to marine conservation, environmental stewardship and sustainable guest experiences within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll.
Harry brings extensive experience in marine conservation, environmental sustainability, scuba diving and guest engagement within the luxury hospitality sector. He joins Finolhu from The Westin Maldives, where he served as Marine Biologist and Scuba Instructor, leading marine education programmes, supporting conservation projects and developing immersive ocean experiences that encouraged guests to gain a deeper understanding of the Maldives’ distinctive marine environment.
His appointment supports Finolhu’s broader sustainability strategy and its continued efforts to protect the fragile ecosystems surrounding the resort. Located in one of the Maldives’ most ecologically important regions, Finolhu offers guests access to the rich natural environment of Baa Atoll, an internationally recognised marine area known for its coral reefs, diverse marine life and exceptional biodiversity.
The resort combines luxury island hospitality with a strong focus on preserving the environment that defines the destination. Its extensive lagoon, white-sand beaches and surrounding reefs provide guests with opportunities to explore the natural beauty of the Maldives while learning about the importance of responsible tourism and marine protection.
Finolhu has established a comprehensive coral restoration programme focused on protecting, regenerating and strengthening the reefs surrounding the island. At the centre of the programme are two underwater coral nurseries comprising more than 40 coral trees and over 2,000 coral fragments. Many of the fragments have been adopted and planted by guests and resort team members, creating a collaborative approach to reef restoration and environmental responsibility.
More than 1,500 coral fragments have so far been successfully transplanted from the nurseries back onto surrounding reef areas. The programme is helping to restore essential habitats for marine species while improving the resilience of the reef ecosystem against environmental pressures such as coral bleaching, rising ocean temperatures and other effects associated with climate change.
Under Harry’s leadership, Finolhu plans to further develop its marine conservation activities by combining scientific reef restoration, sustainability initiatives, environmental monitoring and educational programmes. His role will also involve engaging guests and team members in practical conservation activities and strengthening awareness of the ecological importance of Baa Atoll.
Guests staying at the resort can participate directly in conservation through initiatives including Finolhu’s coral adoption programme and Coral Conservation Course. These experiences combine marine education with citizen science, allowing participants to learn about coral ecosystems, understand the challenges facing reefs and contribute to the resort’s continuing restoration work.
The programmes are designed to make conservation accessible and meaningful by enabling visitors to become actively involved in protecting the environment they have travelled to experience.
