Copies of the Holy Quran donated by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have been distributed to several newly opened mosques across the Maldives, providing essential religious resources to support worship, Quran recitation, and religious learning within local communities. The distribution reflects ongoing cooperation between the Maldives and Saudi Arabia in strengthening Islamic services and supporting religious institutions across the country.
The mosques that have received these Mushafs include Masjid al-Shaheed Umar Ahmed located at the HA. Dhidhdhoo Islamic Centre, Masjid al-Siddiq in Lh. Kurendhoo, Masjid al-Tauba in N. Manadhoo, Masjid Rayyan in S. Maradhoo, Masjid al-Noor in Sh. Foakaidhoo, Masjid al-Ikhlas in Lh. Olhuvelifushi, the Thundi Harbor Mosque in L. Gan, Masjid Zuwaydha Ahmed in HA. Ihavandhoo, Masjid Iman in Hulhumalé Phase 2, Masjid al-Rahma in ADh. Omadhoo, Masjid Mohamed Qasim in N. Kudafari, Masjid Shamima Abdullah in N. Kendhikulhudhoo, Masjid al-Salam in L. Gan, and Masjid Yusuf al-Barbari in Malé City. These mosques were recently completed and opened ahead of the holy month of Ramadan this year, enabling communities across the islands to gather for congregational prayers and religious activities in newly established facilities.
The provision of Holy Quran copies to these mosques ensures that worshippers have access to Mushafs for daily prayers, Quran recitation circles, and educational programs conducted within the mosques. The availability of these copies also supports Quran memorization classes and broader religious learning activities that are commonly held in mosques throughout the Maldives, particularly during Ramadan when participation in religious gatherings increases significantly.
In 2024, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia donated a total of 50,500 copies of the Holy Quran to the Maldives through two separate shipments. The donation was made to facilitate the distribution of Mushafs to mosques, Quran memorization classes, Islamic centers, and other religious institutions across the country. The initiative aims to ensure that communities throughout the archipelago have access to high-quality copies of the Holy Quran to support both individual worship and organized religious education.
The Ministry continues to distribute these Mushafs to Quran classes, mosques, and religious institutions across the Maldives as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen religious services and support the development of Islamic learning nationwide. Through this distribution program, newly established mosques and educational centers are being equipped with the resources necessary to facilitate Quran recitation, memorization programs, and other forms of religious study.
The donation of the Holy Quran by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia reflects the enduring bilateral relationship between the Maldives and Saudi Arabia and the continued collaboration between the two nations in supporting Islamic initiatives and religious development. The initiative also highlights Saudi Arabia’s longstanding contributions to Islamic education and community development in the Maldives, reinforcing shared commitments to promoting religious knowledge, strengthening faith-based institutions, and supporting the spiritual wellbeing of Muslim communities across the country.
