The Government of Japan has signed a grant contract with the Maldives Red Crescent (MRC) to support the provision of a dedicated transportation vehicle designed to assist elderly individuals in Malé City, particularly those facing mobility challenges. The agreement reflects continued cooperation between Japan and the Maldives in strengthening community welfare and improving access to essential services for vulnerable groups.
The grant contract for “The Project for the Provision of Elderly Support Transportation Vehicle in Malé City” was signed between Ishigami Rumiko, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, and Ahmed Shabin, Secretary General of the Maldives Red Crescent. The project is being implemented under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme, which focuses on supporting community-level initiatives that enhance human security and social well-being.
Under the agreement, the Government of Japan will provide a grant of USD 65,784 to procure a specially equipped vehicle that will facilitate the transportation of elderly individuals, including those with limited mobility, across Malé City. The vehicle will be designed to ensure safe and comfortable travel for elderly passengers, enabling them to reach healthcare facilities and other essential services more efficiently.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Ambassador Ishigami highlighted the importance of improving transportation access for the elderly population in the Maldives. She noted that as the number of elderly citizens continues to grow, ensuring convenient and reliable access to medical services has become increasingly important. The newly funded vehicle is expected to help elderly individuals travel more easily to healthcare appointments while also easing the pressure on emergency transport services.
Maldives Red Crescent Secretary General Ahmed Shabin stated that the project will significantly improve mobility and healthcare access for elderly residents who often face difficulties in reaching medical facilities and other essential services. He emphasized that the availability of a dedicated transportation vehicle will provide safer and more timely travel options, enabling elderly individuals to maintain their health and participate more actively in social life.
The initiative will also strengthen the Maldives Red Crescent’s patient transport service by expanding its capacity to support vulnerable individuals who require assistance when traveling for medical care. In addition to improving routine patient transport, ongoing efforts are being undertaken to further enhance emergency response operations, ensuring that communities receive timely and effective assistance when needed.
Through this collaboration, Japan and the Maldives Red Crescent continue to support initiatives that improve community welfare and strengthen social support systems, particularly for elderly citizens who require additional assistance to access essential services in the capital.
