Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has stated that the Ayla Sustainable Township project will open a new chapter in the Maldives’ tourism industry, positioning the country for a more diversified, resilient, and future-ready economic landscape. The Minister made the remarks at the groundbreaking ceremony of the first sustainable township to be developed in the Maldives under the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) framework, describing the project as a transformational step that goes beyond conventional tourism development.
Minister Saeed emphasised that Ayla represents an opportunity to rethink the Maldives’ economic growth model and reimagine the future of its tourism sector. As global competition intensifies and traveller preferences continue to evolve, he noted that innovative and forward-looking approaches have become essential. He highlighted that the Maldives’ natural environment and distinctive geographical setting remain irreplaceable assets, providing a strong foundation upon which new, diversified tourism concepts can be built.
Building on the country’s successful resort-based tourism model, the government is now expanding the sector in line with emerging market trends, with projects such as Ayla designed to enrich visitor experiences and broaden the scope of tourism offerings. The township is envisioned as an integrated destination that blends leisure, residential, commercial, and lifestyle elements within a carefully planned, environmentally responsible setting. This approach is expected to appeal to travellers seeking more immersive, meaningful, and longer-term engagement with the Maldives, while also attracting investors looking for sustainable and high-quality developments.
Minister Saeed stated that developments such as Ayla will strengthen the global perception of the Maldives as not only a premier holiday destination, but also a highly attractive place to live, work, and invest. He described this as an invaluable opportunity for the country to be recognised as a destination for long-term partnerships, sustainable investment, and innovation-driven growth.
From an economic standpoint, the project is expected to generate wide-ranging benefits across multiple sectors, including construction, retail, education, healthcare, and logistics. The expansion of these industries will contribute to job creation, support the adoption of new technologies, and enhance overall productivity, reinforcing the private sector’s role as a key driver of national development.
The Ayla Sustainable Township is being developed by Crystal Holdings Pvt Ltd with a total investment of USD 790 million. The project is expected to stand out within the Indian Ocean region and globally, distinguished by its modern infrastructure, high-quality urban planning, and strong emphasis on sustainability. As construction progresses, Ayla is anticipated to become a flagship example of how integrated townships and resort-style developments can coexist with environmental stewardship, offering a model for the next generation of tourism and mixed-use developments in the Maldives.
