On 24 September 2025, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru celebrated a milestone that resonates deeply within the Maldives’ tourism story, the 30th anniversary of its founding. As the first international luxury hotel chain to establish a resort in the country, Banyan Tree has for three decades stood as a sanctuary where nature, culture, and heartfelt hospitality converge. Under the theme “The Legacy Continues”, the anniversary honored the resort’s journey of sustainability, barefoot luxury, and authentic Maldivian connection.
The evening of celebration brought together culture, community, and creativity. Guests were invited to walk through the “Walk of Legacy” photo exhibition, chronicling the resort’s path since opening its doors on 23 September 1995. The event highlighted Maldivian artistry at Vabbin Fannu, a dedicated space where traditional crafts such as Thundu Kunaa reed weaving, Liye Laajehun lacquerware, Kasabu Viyun embroidery, and the heritage of local fishing were displayed with pride. A workshop led by a Maldivian artist transformed Styrofoam into meaningful art, showcasing sustainability through creativity, while the pulse of Bodu Beru drums and cultural dances filled the island with the spirit of Maldivian tradition. The symbolic highlight came when the resort’s founders and honored guests revealed fire signage rising from the ocean with the message “The Legacy Continues,” reaffirming Banyan Tree’s enduring promise to community, conservation, and wellbeing.
Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru has long been regarded as a pioneer in Maldivian hospitality. It was here that spa experiences were first introduced to the country in 1995, creating a new standard for wellness and relaxation that remains central to luxury tourism today. In 2004, the resort established the Maldives’ first resort-based marine laboratory, spearheading coral restoration projects and educational programs that continue to nurture both visitors and local students. Its holistic philosophy, rooted in Asian healing traditions and regenerative tourism, has become a hallmark of eco-luxury across the region.
The 30th anniversary was marked not only by reflection but by new initiatives and recognitions that highlight the resort’s ongoing impact. Among these was the launch of Banyan Tree Connections, an immersive wellbeing program designed for couples to reconnect through culture, nature, and shared experiences. A national community clean-up initiative, One Nation. One Ocean. One Hour—mobilized thousands across the islands in partnership with NGOs, removing large amounts of plastic waste from the ocean. The resort also partnered with Maldives National University to launch a Marine Foundational Course, offering Maldivian students hands-on training at its marine lab and creating a bridge between tourism and academia. Recognition came in the form of the South Asian Travel Awards (SATA 2025), where the resort was named the Leading Eco-Resort in South Asia.
At the core of Banyan Tree’s legacy are the people who have carried its vision forward. Many associates have been with Vabbinfaru since its early years, including Deputy General Manager Mohamed Naeem, who began his journey before the official opening. Reflecting on the resort’s culture, he emphasized the progressive welfare measures that shaped industry standards, such as associate leave every three months and comprehensive training programs. Founder and Executive Chairman of Banyan Group, Mr. Ho Kwon Ping, echoed this sentiment, recalling the original vision to create a sanctuary where people could reconnect with nature and themselves, a vision that continues to guide the brand’s philosophy.
Speaking on the occasion, General Manager Elias Pertoft highlighted the resort’s enduring authenticity: “For 30 years, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru has stayed true to the Original Maldives spirit. As we enter the fourth decade, we remain at the forefront of regenerative tourism, protecting our marine environment, strengthening community ties, and celebrating Maldivian heritage.”
The anniversary also introduced a refreshed experience for guests, unveiling newly designed villas and three signature dining venues. Saffron, the award-winning Thai restaurant, continues to delight with authentic flavors; Sangu Garden offers outdoor barbecue experiences with fresh, locally sourced produce; and Madi Hiyaa, the celebrated overwater Japanese restaurant, combines culinary excellence with panoramic ocean views. Together, they embody the resort’s ethos of sustainability and cultural authenticity while redefining luxury dining in the Maldives.
Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru’s 30th anniversary is more than a celebration of the past, it is an invitation for travelers to experience the Maldives through a lens of harmony, heritage, and heartfelt connection. Rooted in the philosophy of “A Sanctuary for the Senses,” the resort continues to shape the story of eco-luxury tourism, inspiring visitors to rediscover the Maldives in its purest and most authentic form.
