India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has officially shifted its Malé operations to Terminal 1 of Velana International Airport (VIA), becoming the first Indian carrier to utilize the modern terminal facilities and the eighth airline overall to move into the new building. The development is another boost for connectivity between India and the Maldives, two destinations linked by strong cultural, economic, and especially tourism ties.

A welcoming ceremony was held at Terminal 1 to mark the milestone, attended by Ahmed Faseeh, Controller General of Immigration. IndiGo’s debut at the new terminal saw its check-in counters open for passengers, while 218 outbound travelers received complimentary gift bags. The inaugural IndiGo flight operating from the terminal, flight 6E1127, was greeted with a traditional water salute upon arrival. Passengers arriving on the service, 229 in total were given a warm cultural welcome that highlighted Maldivian hospitality and traditions.

IndiGo first entered the Maldivian market on 15 November 2018, and since then has grown to play a central role in air connectivity between the two countries. The airline’s presence has been vital for travelers from India, which remains one of the top tourist source markets for the Maldives. The convenience of frequent flights from major Indian cities has allowed thousands of holidaymakers to reach Maldivian resorts and guesthouses with ease, directly contributing to the country’s flourishing tourism industry.

With this move, IndiGo joins seven other carriers now operating from Terminal 1: Maldivian, Air Arabia, Beyond, Fitz Air, Beijing Capital Airlines, Batik Air, and Bangkok Airways. The new terminal began operations on 26 July this year, with Maldivian Airlines as the first to commence services. Its state-of-the-art facilities are designed to enhance passenger experience, streamline operations, and support the growing demand for international travel to and from the Maldives.

For the Maldives, where tourism accounts for a large share of the economy, stronger connectivity with India represents more than just airline logistics, it is a gateway for increasing visitor arrivals. Indian travelers consistently rank among the highest number of annual visitors, attracted by the Maldives’ pristine beaches, luxury resorts, and world-class diving opportunities. The addition of IndiGo to VIA’s new terminal underlines the Maldives’ continuing efforts to modernize its infrastructure to meet the needs of both international carriers and the millions of tourists who travel through its doors every year.

This milestone not only celebrates the progress of Velana International Airport but also signals the Maldives’ commitment to providing seamless travel experiences for foreign visitors, strengthening its place as a premier destination in the Indian Ocean.
