With crystal-clear waters, luxurious resorts, and a deep-rooted cultural charm, the Maldives continues to captivate global travellers and this year, its efforts to innovate and diversify have received regional acclaim. At the South Asian Travel Awards (SATA) 2025, held on September 20 at the Cinnamon Grand Colombo, Sri Lanka, the Maldives emerged as one of the evening’s top achievers, winning an impressive total of 36 awards. This included 16 Gold and 19 Silver Awards across various categories, reinforcing the nation’s reputation for excellence and leadership in tourism within the region.
The highlight of the evening was the Maldives securing the prestigious Visitors’ Choice Award for Leading Adventure Destination, an accolade that reflects the evolving face of Maldivian tourism. Traditionally known for its ultra-luxury resorts and honeymoon escapes, the country has successfully broadened its tourism offerings, integrating more experience-rich activities that appeal to a wide spectrum of travellers. From diving with manta rays to surfing untouched reef breaks and exploring cultural heritage in inhabited islands, this award signals growing international recognition for the Maldives’ strategic pivot towards experiential and adventure-based tourism.
Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), the national tourism promotion body, played a pivotal role in achieving this milestone. CEO and Managing Director Mr. Ibrahim Shiuree represented the Maldives at the event and participated in a regional panel discussion titled “Collective Efforts in Tourism,” which was part of the SATA Connect & Conversation segment. He was joined by respected industry experts including Mr. Sanjeev Kumar, President of Voyages Kerala; Mr. Taufiq Rahman, Secretary General of PATA Bangladesh Chapter; and Ms. Nandini Lahe-Thapa from Nepal Tourism Board. Moderated by Ishan Koul of Naaz Hotel Consultants, the session explored regional strategies to boost cooperation and sustainable growth in tourism.
During the discussion, Mr. Shiuree emphasized the importance of inclusive development, pointing to the rise of local island tourism as a success story. Today, guesthouses contribute to around 24% of the country’s total bed capacity, welcoming over 300,000 visitors in the first nine months of 2025 alone. This development has not only diversified the tourism landscape beyond high-end resort offerings but also empowered local communities through job creation and entrepreneurship.
He highlighted how local communities are increasingly integrated into the tourism value chain through sourcing fresh produce and traditional crafts, training youth and women in tourism services, and offering cultural experiences that preserve and celebrate Maldivian identity. These efforts help ensure that the economic benefits of tourism reach all corners of the archipelago, not just resort islands.
Mr. Shiuree also discussed key regional collaborations, such as the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding with Malaysia to co-promote eco-tourism and sustainable travel initiatives. He touched on the development of “twin-country” packages with Sri Lanka and India, and ongoing work to enhance air connectivity within South Asia, aimed at easing multi-destination travel for global tourists.
This year’s recognition at SATA 2025 strengthens the Maldives’ position as a front-runner in tourism innovation and quality. The accolades span categories that reflect the country’s breadth of offerings from luxury resorts and adventure experiences to sustainability, wellness, and community engagement.
In recent years, Maldivian resorts have continued to set global standards in hospitality and service. With over 170 high-end resorts spread across the atolls, many of which feature private villas, overwater bungalows, and spa sanctuaries surrounded by pristine nature, the Maldives remains an aspirational destination. The ongoing efforts to combine resort luxury with authentic experiences through excursions to nearby local islands, marine conservation initiatives, and wellness retreats have positioned the Maldives as a destination that offers both indulgence and meaning.
The awards at SATA 2025 are a clear reflection of the Maldives’ dynamic growth and adaptability in the global travel market. As the country continues to expand its reach through sustainable tourism, local empowerment, and regional cooperation, it remains one of the most attractive and forward-thinking destinations for travellers seeking more than just beauty but also purpose, culture, and connection.
