Efforts to enhance regional connectivity and stimulate tourism in the southern atolls of the Maldives took a promising step forward as Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen held discussions with the Fuvahmulah City Council regarding the expansion of Fuvahmulah Airport and the development of the island’s broader transport network. The official visit by Minister Ameen included a dedicated meeting with Mayor Ismail Rafeeq and council members, where a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to formalize collaborative plans aimed at improving the quality and accessibility of transport services across land, sea, and air.
In an official statement, Minister Ameen highlighted that the discussions revolved around optimizing airport operations while concurrently strengthening land and maritime transport links, aligning with the government’s national strategy to enhance integrated transport infrastructure. The goal, he noted, is not only to better serve the residents of Fuvahmulah but to also unlock wider economic benefits for the island by improving ease of access for tourists, investors, and service providers.
Fuvahmulah Airport, managed by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), has come under increasing attention for its potential to serve as a southern tourism gateway. Opened in November 2011, the airport currently features a 1,200-metre runway primarily accommodating domestic flights. However, discussions are underway to extend the runway to 1,800 metres, which would allow for the landing of larger jet aircraft. This would significantly improve the island’s ability to welcome international charters and boost its profile as a standalone tourist destination, particularly given Fuvahmulah’s unique ecosystem and diving attractions.
In line with this vision, MACL’s Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, along with a technical team, visited the island on 6 September to inspect the airport’s current operational status and engage in discussions with the City Council. During the inspection, both parties reviewed challenges related to equipment, facilities, and technical resources and emphasized the need for a detailed feasibility study to evaluate the airport’s development capacity. Plans also include expanding the passenger terminal and creating dedicated tourism-friendly infrastructure to cater to expected visitor inflows in the coming years.
The airport expansion plan complements Fuvahmulah’s existing strengths as a tourism destination. Known for its single-island city status, diverse natural beauty, and globally recognized dive sites such as Tiger Shark Point, the island has the potential to become a niche yet high-value destination. Enhanced airport operations and streamlined transport systems will be critical in positioning Fuvahmulah as a viable alternative for travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences within the Maldives.
With the MoU now in place and further technical assessments underway, the collaboration between the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, MACL, and Fuvahmulah City Council represents a concerted effort to decentralize tourism growth and modernize infrastructure in the southern region. These initiatives are expected to increase regional air traffic, foster economic opportunities for the local community, and contribute meaningfully to the Maldives’ broader tourism development goals.
