A steady increase in international air traffic is reflecting a strong start to 2025 for the Maldives tourism industry. According to the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), international flight movements recorded a five percent rise during the first seven months of the year, aligning with a substantial surge in tourist arrivals.
Between January and July 2025, the country welcomed 10,187 international flights, compared to 9,698 during the same period in 2024. This growth has been largely driven by scheduled commercial airline services, which saw a 5.5 percent increase up from 8,866 flights last year to 9,358 flights this year. The data suggests that more airlines are increasing their presence in the Maldives, reaffirming the country’s position as a highly attractive destination for leisure travelers worldwide.
While scheduled flights continued their upward trend, general aviation movements, including charter flights and private jets, showed a marginal decline. A total of 829 general aviation landings were recorded in the first seven months of 2025, slightly down from 832 in the corresponding period last year. Despite this small dip, the overall growth in international arrivals continues to bolster the tourism economy.
So far this year, tourist arrivals have surpassed 1.5 million, a 9.7 percent increase from the same time in 2024. This sustained upward trajectory highlights the Maldives’ consistent appeal to international travelers, particularly those seeking premium island experiences, luxury resorts, and natural marine beauty.
The increase in flight movements not only supports growing visitor demand but also reflects the effectiveness of national strategies to expand international connectivity and air access. The MMA’s reporting underscores the broader economic contributions of tourism to the nation’s development, as inbound traffic plays a critical role in sustaining employment, investment, and service-sector growth.
With strong infrastructure in place and international interest showing no signs of slowing, the Maldives continues to strengthen its reputation as a leading global tourism hub in the Indian Ocean region.
