Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa is set to host one of the world’s most exciting boutique surf competitions, the 13th Annual Surfing Champions Trophy, taking place from September 4 to 11, 2025. This exclusive event, where surfing legends take on three board disciplines, single fin, twin fin, and thruster, will this year welcome 18-year-old Australian sensation Sierra Kerr, who will not only be the youngest competitor in the event’s history, but also the first female athlete aiming for the trophy.
A Full-Circle Journey for Surfing’s Rising Star
Sierra Kerr’s entry into the tournament is deeply personal. At just 12 years old, she watched her father two-time Surfing Champions Trophy winner Josh Kerr ride the waves at Sultans, one of the Maldives’ premier reef breaks. Inspired by her father’s triumphs in 2018 and 2019, Sierra dreamed of joining the ranks. Today, she’s not only fulfilling that dream but making history with her debut appearance.
“I’ve got so many great memories of the Maldives,” shares Kerr, who spent her childhood between Australia’s Gold Coast and California. “Seeing Dad win the Surfing Champions Trophy was amazing. I remember saying that I hoped one day I’d surf well enough to be invited myself!”
Now the 2023 World Junior Champion, Kerr is known for her versatility across sports, excelling not only in surfing but also in skateboarding and maintaining a golf handicap of 8. Her participation adds a dynamic edge to this year’s roster, which already includes fellow Australians Craig Anderson and Jesse Mendes. The remaining three competitors one of whom will be a Maldivian wildcard are set to be revealed soon.
Competition Format and Surfboard Innovation
This invitation-only event challenges surfers to adapt to different surfing styles using three types of surfboards. Kerr has experience competing on a twin fin and thruster but will be trying a single fin for the first time. Her surf gear reflects a blend of tradition and innovation JS Industries will supply her thrusters, while her father’s brand, Draft, will provide the custom-made twin fin and single fin boards.
Immersive Guest Experience at Kuda Huraa
Spectators staying at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa during the week-long event can enjoy unparalleled access to the surf competition. Daily heats unfold against the stunning turquoise backdrop of Sultans, with guests invited to view the action from the comfort of the resort’s luxury boats. Heat winners are announced at informal beachfront gatherings, offering visitors a chance to mingle with professional surfers in an intimate island setting.
Beyond the surf, the resort itself is a haven of tropical luxury. Known for its pristine surroundings, award-winning hospitality, and exceptional recreation offerings, Kuda Huraa continues to be a favourite for families, couples, and adventure-seekers alike. “Four Seasons is the best of the best,” says Kerr. “It’s beautiful, has so many fun activities, and the staff are so kind and helpful.
