The Maldives has been nominated for the prestigious World’s Leading Sustainable Destination 2026 title at the World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards (WSTHA), further strengthening the country’s standing as a globally recognised destination committed to responsible and sustainable tourism development.

Voting for the award is currently open and will continue until 21 October 2026. Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC) has called on travellers, tourism industry partners and supporters of the Maldives around the world to cast their votes in support of the destination.

The nomination reflects the Maldives’ continued efforts to balance the growth of its internationally renowned tourism industry with the protection of its natural environment. With tourism closely connected to the country’s pristine beaches, coral reefs, lagoons and marine ecosystems, sustainability has become increasingly important to the long-term development and competitiveness of the sector.

Across the Maldives, tourism development is increasingly being shaped by efforts to strengthen environmental responsibility, support local communities and businesses, and preserve the natural resources that have made the country one of the world’s most sought-after island destinations. The Government has continued to place sustainable tourism development among its priorities as the country works to ensure that tourism growth delivers long-term economic and social benefits while safeguarding the environment for future generations.

The latest nomination adds to a growing list of international recognitions received by the Maldives. The destination has been named Indian Ocean’s Leading Green Destination for three consecutive years from 2024 to 2026, demonstrating continued international recognition of its sustainability efforts. The Maldives has also received prominent regional recognition as the Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination, Leading Dive Destination and Leading Honeymoon Destination.

Established in 2023 under the World Travel Awards portfolio, the World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards recognise destinations and organisations demonstrating leadership in environmental, social and economic sustainability across the international travel and hospitality industry.

For the 2026 World’s Leading Sustainable Destination title, the Maldives is competing alongside prominent international destinations including the City of Dubrovnik, Diriyah: The City of Earth, Dubai and Serengeti National Park.

The nomination provides another opportunity for the Maldives to showcase internationally how its tourism industry, Government institutions and tourism stakeholders are working to strengthen sustainable development while maintaining the exceptional natural beauty and distinctive island experiences for which the destination is known worldwide.

Voting will close on 21 October 2026. Supporters may vote through the official World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards platform by registering for a free account or signing in to an existing account.
