A growing number of global travellers are choosing the Maldives as their preferred holiday destination, with official statistics revealing a remarkable increase in tourist arrivals and resort stays for 2025. As of mid-August, the Maldives has welcomed 1,374,699 tourists, marking a 9% increase compared to the 1,261,503 arrivals recorded during the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Environment.

Resorts continue to be the cornerstone of the Maldivian tourism experience, attracting the majority of visitors with their exclusive island settings, luxury amenities, and world-class hospitality. An impressive 1,008,081 tourists have spent their holidays in resorts so far this year, reaffirming the Maldives’ reputation as a top-tier luxury escape.

Guesthouses followed as the second most popular option, accommodating 300,763 visitors, while 36,519 tourists chose to stay in tourist hotels. Safari yachts, offering a unique experience of cruising through the Maldivian atolls, hosted 28,354 travellers.

China leads the top five source markets, contributing 208,069 tourist arrivals, reaffirming its position as the largest market for Maldivian tourism in 2025. Russia follows with 163,060 visitors, while the United Kingdom holds third place with 126,906 arrivals. Italy and Germany complete the top five with 98,482 and 95,454 tourists, respectively.

On average, the Maldives is now welcoming 6,137 tourists per day, showcasing the continued global appeal of its pristine beaches, vibrant marine biodiversity, and signature overwater villas.

The government remains committed to strengthening tourism and has set an ambitious target to surpass last year’s historic 2 million arrivals. With strong mid-year performance and increased connectivity, the aim for 2.3 million tourists in 2025 reflects the country’s strategic focus on sustainable growth and enhanced visitor experiences.

With a broad range of accommodation options, expanding international flight routes, and continued investments in tourism infrastructure, the Maldives offers something for every type of traveller  from honeymooners and diving enthusiasts to families and solo explorers. The destination continues to shine as a jewel of the Indian Ocean, inviting the world to experience its unmatched natural beauty and hospitality.
