Cargo operations at Velana International Airport (VIA) have recorded steady growth in the first half of the year, highlighting the airport’s increasing role as a strategic hub for air freight in the Indian Ocean region. According to statistics released by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), a total of 34,500 tonnes of cargo were processed between January and June, underscoring the continued strength of both domestic supply chains and international trade links.
Of this total, 25,262 tonnes comprised imports, reflecting the Maldives’ reliance on air freight for high-value goods, perishables, and essential supplies. Exports reached 2,432 tonnes, marking a 6% increase compared to the same period last year, an encouraging sign for the country’s trade-driven industries, particularly fisheries, fresh produce, and other premium export commodities.
Transshipment cargo also experienced notable growth, with 6,879 tonnes handled in the period, representing a 12% year-on-year rise. This included 5,621 tonnes of air-to-air cargo and 1,258 tonnes of sea-to-air cargo, demonstrating VIA’s growing capacity to facilitate multi-modal cargo operations that link regional shipping routes with long-haul air transport.
Afcom Cargo remained the primary cargo carrier serving the Maldives, operating three weekly flights to key destinations. Other carriers contributing to VIA’s freight operations included Fly Vaayu, MJets, and Qatar Cargo, which together support a broad network of international and regional trade connections.
The improved cargo handling performance is supported by the airport’s state-of-the-art cargo terminal, which opened in January last year as part of the 2018 airport expansion project. The modern facility boasts an annual handling capacity of 120,000 tonnes, significantly enhancing operational efficiency and readiness for future growth. Designed to meet international cargo handling standards, the terminal includes a three-storey office complex housing 55 dedicated offices for airline cargo operators and customs brokers, ensuring smooth coordination of freight processing, storage, and documentation.
MACL has emphasized that these developments reflect its long-term vision to position Velana International Airport as a regional logistics hub, complementing the Maldives’ tourism economy by strengthening import-export capabilities. With enhanced infrastructure, increasing carrier participation, and a steady upward trend in cargo volumes, VIA continues to play a vital role in connecting the Maldives to global markets while supporting local industries and trade.
