Maldivian athletes continue to make waves at the ongoing Asian Surfing Championship (ASC), with remarkable performances from both junior and open category surfers proudly representing the island nation on an international stage. The competition, which gathers top-tier surfers from across the region, serves as a key platform for showcasing emerging and seasoned talent, and this year, the Maldives has made a historic mark with its most diverse team yet.

Among the standout performances, Yusuf Kayan Hamdan Zaki (Kai Zaki) emerged victorious in Heat 2 of the Men’s Junior Category in round two, securing his advancement to the highly competitive third round of the championship. He scored 6.17 points, outpacing India’s Naveen Kumar (4.00) and Singapore’s Muhammad Hayyan (1.50). This win follows his third-place finish in round one, proving his determination to push forward in this challenging tournament structure.

In the same category, Yasin Ahmed Nasheed had already secured a spot in the third round after placing second in Heat 5 of round one. According to tournament rules, only the top two surfers in each heat progress directly to the third round, while third-place finishers must compete again in round two for another chance.

Kayan Abdulla Areef (Kaiputty) also represented the Maldives in the Men’s Junior Category. After placing third in his first-round heat, he returned in round two with a strong score of 6.90, though it wasn’t enough to advance further. He was edged out by Thailand’s Gwynt Jandke (7.30) and Lebanon’s Ryan Hakawati (7.83), who claimed second and first place respectively in Heat 2.

While the junior male athletes have shown commendable grit, the Women’s Open Category saw a bittersweet conclusion for Maldives’ female surfers. Despite their historic participation, marking the first time more than one female athlete has represented the Maldives in an international surfing competition, all three contestants ended their run in the second round.

Shaziya Saeed (Saazu) and Fathimath Rishtha Shuja competed in Heat 5, scoring 1.50 and 0.77 respectively. They were outpaced by Bangladesh’s Fatema Akter (3.46) and Chinese Taipei’s Yun-Jung Chung, who dominated the heat with an impressive 8.67. Mariyam Rahil Naseem (Aaya) participated in Heat 2, earning a score of 0.97 and finishing behind Malaysia’s Nurain Isa (1.50) and Chinese Taipei’s Wan-Yu Chen (10.17), the highest-scoring female performance in the round.

Despite the exit, the inclusion of multiple female surfers in an overseas competition marks a significant milestone for women’s surfing in the Maldives, signaling a strong push toward greater gender representation and participation in competitive sports.

The Men’s Open Category continues to be a stronghold for Maldivian surfers. All three contestants, Ismail Rasheed (Smiley), Hood Ahmed, and Ahmed Agil, have advanced to the third round of the competition. Smiley and Hood both claimed first place in Heats 2 and 4 of round two, while Agil topped Heat 11 in round one, ensuring a strong Maldivian presence as the competition intensifies.

Behind this growing success is a robust support system. Since 2022, BML Islamic has been the official sponsor of the Maldives national surfing team, offering both financial and logistical assistance through the Maldives Surfing Association (MSA). Their ongoing sponsorship not only supports international participation but also strengthens local development through initiatives such as the National Junior Surfing Championship, aimed at nurturing the next generation of surfers.

The Asian Surfing Championship serves as a vital platform for talent development and international exposure, and the performance of the Maldivian team, especially the junior and female surfers, demonstrates the country’s growing competitiveness in the sport. With strong community backing and institutional support, Maldives is not only making a splash in regional waters but steadily building a legacy in Asian surfing.

As the third rounds unfold, all eyes will be on Kai Zaki, Yasin Ahmed, and the rest of the team to carry the Maldivian flag further into the championship, bringing pride, inspiration, and greater visibility to the nation’s thriving surf culture.
