Tourism connectivity between Southeast Asia and the Maldives is set to strengthen as Malaysia Airlines increases its flight frequency to Malé ahead of the high-demand winter travel season. Starting from 30 October 2025, the national carrier of Malaysia will enhance its service on the Kuala Lumpur–Malé route from the current daily operation to 11 weekly flights.
The additional services, operating on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, will be flown using the 174-seat Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. This expansion marks a continued commitment by Malaysia Airlines to cater to the growing demand for travel between Malaysia and the Maldives, especially following the airline’s return to the Maldivian skies in August 2024 after a seven-year suspension.
This increase in connectivity not only facilitates greater access for Malaysian and Southeast Asian tourists seeking world-class beach holidays in the Maldives, but also supports business and educational travel for Maldivians visiting Malaysia. The route, which directly connects Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to Velana International Airport (MLE), is a competitive segment, with Malaysia Airlines facing direct competition from regional low-cost carriers such as AirAsia and Batik Air.
Malaysia has long been a favored destination for Maldivians for higher education, medical tourism, and leisure travel. In parallel, Malaysian tourists are increasingly choosing the Maldives as a luxury getaway, contributing to bilateral tourism growth.
According to official arrival statistics, tourist arrivals to the Maldives from Malaysia have surged by 72.9% in the first half of 2025. From January to June, 11,269 Malaysian tourists visited the Maldives, up from 6,517 during the same period in 2024. This substantial rise in visitor numbers underscores the growing appeal of the Maldives among Malaysian travelers and the timeliness of the airline’s decision to add more flights.
The increased frequency is expected to improve seat availability, offer more flexible travel options for holidaymakers, and boost connectivity for the Maldives tourism sector, one of the country’s most vital economic engines. With winter approaching and demand for tropical destinations on the rise, the move also reflects the broader travel trend of Malaysians seeking international getaways to sun-kissed islands with luxury resorts and pristine marine experiences.
As the Maldives continues to enhance its global connectivity and reinforce its status as a premier destination for luxury and sustainable tourism, improved air access through major hubs such as Kuala Lumpur is vital in expanding its reach to Asian markets.
