Tokyo’s long-standing support for Malé received renewed emphasis this week, as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Dr Abdulla Khaleel, held official discussions with the visiting Japanese Special Envoy and Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Ikuina Akiko. The meeting, held on Saturday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Malé, was part of the Special Envoy’s official visit to the Maldives from 25–27 July 2025.
Welcoming Hon. Akiko and her delegation, Minister Dr Khaleel highlighted the depth and resilience of bilateral ties forged since the Maldives gained independence in 1965. He expressed appreciation for the close friendship and cooperation that have characterized Japan-Maldives relations over the past five decades. Acknowledging Japan’s consistent and impactful support during critical stages of the Maldives’ development, Dr Khaleel underscored Tokyo’s role in advancing key sectors such as education, telecommunications, and fisheries during the 1970s and 1980s.
Minister Dr Khaleel noted that Japan’s development assistance has reached beyond infrastructure and policy, positively affecting the daily lives of Maldivian citizens. He emphasized that Japanese-funded initiatives have strengthened public welfare, created economic opportunities, and elevated education outcomes in various communities across the country. Among these contributions, the renovation and maintenance of the Malé seawall stands as a vital example. He described the seawall as not only a protective barrier safeguarding the capital from natural disasters, but also as a lasting testament to the enduring friendship and solidarity shared between the two island nations.
Discussions between the Maldivian and Japanese delegations focused on ways to deepen collaboration both bilaterally and through regional and multilateral platforms. The two sides reaffirmed their mutual commitment to strengthening cooperation in areas of shared interest, including climate resilience, sustainable development, maritime security, and people-to-people exchanges.
Foreign Minister Dr Khaleel was joined at the meeting by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Ambassador-at-Large Abdullah Hameed, Additional Secretary Amin Javed Faizal, Director Maryam Bassama Farooq, and Assistant Director Mohamed Shujau.
Japan and the Maldives have long enjoyed friendly and cooperative ties, grounded in mutual respect and shared values. With over 40 years of development cooperation, Japan has played a vital role in enhancing the Maldives’ socio-economic landscape. Notable Japanese assistance projects include the construction of educational facilities, fisheries training centers, road infrastructure, and health centers across several islands.
As Japan continues to support the Maldives in areas such as disaster risk reduction and environmental sustainability, this high-level exchange signals both countries’ intention to advance their strategic partnership in the years ahead. The meeting reaffirmed shared priorities and a vision of enduring cooperation built on mutual benefit, development, and diplomatic trust, a positive message to international partners and a reaffirmation of the Maldives as a key player in regional diplomacy and a peaceful, welcoming destination for global travelers.
