As Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi arrived in Malé on Friday morning for his official state visit, prominent Maldivian leaders across the political spectrum extended their warm welcome, underscoring a unified national appreciation for the enduring partnership between the Maldives and India.
The visit, undertaken at the invitation of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, coincides with the 60th Anniversary of the Maldives’ Independence and the 60th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the Maldives and India. In a strong show of national consensus, three former presidents of the Maldives publicly welcomed Prime Minister Modi, expressing confidence in the continued growth of bilateral relations.
Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who led the country for three decades and played a pivotal role in shaping early Maldives–India diplomatic cooperation, shared his sentiments on social media. “Warm welcome to Your Excellency Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Maldives. It is a great honour and privilege for us to receive you in our country. May your visit further strengthen the deep-rooted ties of friendship, understanding, and cooperation between our two nations,” he stated.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed, who continues to play an active role in Maldivian politics, also expressed optimism about the visit. In a social media post, he wrote: “Delighted to see Prime Minister Modi land in Maldives on what will be a very productive trip. It is clear from the warm welcome there is cross-party political consensus on the indisputable value to Maldives of India’s longstanding friendship.”
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih issued an official statement commending President Dr Muizzu for inviting Prime Minister Modi to serve as the Chief Guest at the official celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence. He described Prime Minister Modi’s visit as a testament to the enduring and multifaceted ties that have characterised India–Maldives relations over the decades. Solih also acknowledged the long-standing support provided by India across successive administrations in areas such as infrastructure development, education, health, and disaster relief.
India has consistently maintained a supportive and constructive role in the Maldives’ development journey. From capacity building and medical assistance to investments in housing, coastal infrastructure, and maritime security, India’s contributions have spanned both emergency and long-term projects. The continuity of cooperation across different governments has cemented India’s position as a trusted neighbour and partner in progress.
Prime Minister Modi’s two-day visit includes high-level bilateral talks, the exchange of agreements, joint inaugurations of major projects, and participation in national celebrations. The outpouring of welcome from former presidents affirms that Maldives–India relations transcend party lines, demonstrating the diplomatic maturity and historical depth of the bilateral relationship.
For international observers and foreign visitors, this unity reflects the Maldives’ commitment to regional cooperation and sustainable development, supported by trusted partnerships. As the Maldives continues to thrive as a premier tourism destination and a growing hub for innovation and resilience, the strong and stable relationship with India remains integral to its long-term vision.
