In a notable step toward reinforcing regional healthcare collaboration, the Government of India has officially handed over two advanced Aarogya Maitri Health Cubes to the Maldives. The handover ceremony was held at Sultan Park in Malé and attended by His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and His Excellency Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, who is currently on a two-day state visit to the Maldives.

The donation coincides with two key milestones, the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day and the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and India, highlighting the depth and continuity of bilateral engagement between the two countries. Prime Minister Modi gifted the mobile medical units on behalf of the Indian government, underscoring India’s enduring commitment to supporting the development and resilience of the Maldivian health sector.

The Aarogya Maitri Health Cube is a state-of-the-art, cube-based portable hospital system, the first of its kind in the world. Each unit is equipped with essential emergency medical infrastructure, including an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), an operating theatre, laboratory testing facilities, a digital X-ray machine, and an independent power generator. Designed for rapid deployment, the cubes can be transported via helicopter or even parachute to remote or disaster-affected areas and can be fully operational within just 12 minutes of arrival.
Each health cube can treat up to 200 individuals over a 72-hour period, making them highly effective for mass-casualty incidents, natural disasters, or crisis scenarios where existing healthcare systems may be strained or inaccessible. The flexibility of the system is further enhanced through the BHISHM digital platform, an integrated app that helps configure unit components, monitor medical inventories, and adapt operations to specific emergency requirements.
The two units received by the Maldives will be operated by the Maldives Emergency Medical Service (EMS) under the Ministry of Health. Their integration into the national emergency health framework is expected to significantly strengthen the country’s capacity to respond to medical crises and disasters, especially in geographically dispersed islands where access to advanced care is limited.
This donation reflects the evolving nature of India–Maldives cooperation, particularly in areas critical to public well-being. India’s assistance in the health sector has been long-standing and multifaceted, encompassing everything from the construction and development of healthcare facilities in urban and atoll regions to the training of Maldivian healthcare professionals and the provision of essential medicines. During the COVID-19 pandemic, India played a key role in supplying emergency vaccines and medical equipment to the Maldives at critical times.
The formal handover of the health cubes not only reinforces India’s image as a reliable partner in emergency preparedness but also aligns with broader regional efforts to enhance disaster response infrastructure in small island developing states. For tourists, this advancement adds another layer of confidence, knowing that the Maldives now possesses enhanced capacity to manage health emergencies swiftly and efficiently across its island territories.
As a country that welcomes hundreds of thousands of international visitors each year, the Maldives’ investment in responsive, high-standard healthcare services contributes to a safer, more resilient destination. The addition of these rapidly deployable hospital systems is not just a diplomatic gesture, it is a strategic enhancement to national and regional emergency preparedness, health security, and public service delivery.
