President of the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu, and Prime Minister of the Republic of India, His Excellency Shri Narendra Modi, jointly officiated a virtual inauguration ceremony on Saturday, marking the implementation of several major development projects that reflect the growing depth of bilateral cooperation between the two nations.

The event, held at the President’s Office in Malé as part of Prime Minister Modi’s ongoing state visit, underscored both governments’ commitment to accelerating infrastructure development, enhancing community-level services, and supporting long-term social and economic progress in the Maldives through mutually beneficial partnerships.

The ceremony opened with the symbolic handover of 72 vehicles from the Government of India to the Ministry of Defence of the Maldives, representing a tangible contribution to the island nation’s national security and logistical capabilities. A video presentation highlighted the operational importance of the new fleet, which includes utility and transport vehicles that will enhance mobility and service delivery across the defence sector. President Muizzu and Prime Minister Modi participated in a ceremonial key handover as a gesture of official transfer.

Another central highlight of the event was the virtual handover of 4,000 housing units financed under India’s Buyer’s Credit facility, a major step forward in meeting growing urban housing demands. The project supports the Maldives’ ongoing efforts to improve housing availability for middle- and low-income families. Of these 4,000 units, 700 were officially handed over in October 2024 during President Muizzu’s state visit to India. The event featured a dedicated video presentation showcasing the scale and quality of the housing initiative, which is expected to contribute significantly to community well-being and urban development.

Also inaugurated was the Addu Roads Project, a major infrastructure undertaking funded through India’s Line of Credit. This project is anticipated to greatly improve road safety and internal connectivity across Addu City, the second-largest urban hub in the Maldives. The upgraded road network will improve access to public services, stimulate local economic activity, and provide safer travel routes for both residents and visitors. Its implementation supports the Maldives’ broader national objective of inclusive development across all regions.
In addition to national-level projects, the ceremony also spotlighted six High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs) financed through Indian grant assistance. These projects target community empowerment, youth engagement, sports, and small-scale economic development in local islands. The inaugurated initiatives include:
-
Outdoor Gym at S. Hithadhoo Rasgedhara
-
Outdoor Gym at S. Hithadhoo Beyrumathi
-
Outdoor Gym at GDh. Vaadhoo
-
Youth Centre at GA. Gemanafushi
-
Volleyball Court at Sh. Kanditheemu
-
Small-scale Fish Processing Plant at S. Hithadhoo
These projects aim to enhance the quality of life at the grassroots level, providing residents with improved recreational, vocational, and economic facilities. The fish processing plant in particular is expected to benefit local fisheries communities by supporting value-added activities and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
Through this joint inauguration, both leaders reaffirmed their governments’ shared vision of sustainable development, regional cooperation, and people-centric progress. The initiatives launched span key sectors including housing, transport, youth development, defence, and local infrastructure demonstrating the diverse and practical scope of the Maldives–India partnership.
This occasion marks another milestone in the longstanding diplomatic relationship between the two countries, which in 2025 celebrates 60 years of formal bilateral relations. The projects inaugurated reflect the strategic alignment of both governments in enhancing the well-being of their people while promoting stability, connectivity, and prosperity across the Indian Ocean region
