One of the resort’s most notable recent achievements is the complete transition to a capsule-free coffee system in all guest villas—the first of its kind in the Maldives. Instead of traditional single-use coffee pods, the villas are now equipped with biodegradable coffee balls made entirely from compostable materials, free of plastic and aluminium. These coffee capsules break down naturally in garden soil within weeks, reducing non-recyclable waste and contributing to a more circular waste management model. This initiative alone eliminates an estimated 25,000 capsules from the waste stream annually, according to General Manager Justin Swart.

“This initiative is more than a convenience upgrade, it’s a reflection of the new standard we want to set in luxury travel,” Swart explained. “We’re delivering a superior guest experience while actively reducing our environmental footprint.”

The resort’s sustainability framework extends far beyond coffee. All takeaway packaging has been converted to 100% paper-based alternatives, eliminating single-use plastics from the food and beverage operations. These changes are complemented by eco-focused food concepts such as the plant-based menu at Joos Café, designed to promote both individual wellness and environmental awareness. In addition, zero-waste buffet days and employee zero-waste lunch programs demonstrate the resort’s commitment to minimizing excess and promoting mindful consumption internally.

Energy efficiency is another pillar of the resort’s operational strategy. A robust 365-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system powers much of the resort’s daily energy needs. This installation has already generated over 1.24 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean energy, saving approximately 335,451 litres of diesel and preventing the release of around 1,237 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. With an active offset of 1.65 litres of diesel per minute, the resort is significantly reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and making substantial progress towards a low-carbon future.

To support water sustainability and reduce plastic consumption, The Standard, Huruvalhi Maldives operates an in-house water bottling plant. Plastic water bottles have been replaced with elegant, reusable glass bottles across the resort, providing a high-quality experience for guests while drastically cutting down on plastic waste.

In the resort’s kitchens and supply chain, local sourcing is prioritized to reduce transportation emissions and support the regional economy. The culinary team works closely with local fishing and farming communities to source reef fish, octopus, lobsters, kopifai leaves, and screwpine. Strict compliance with Maldivian fishing regulations, such as purchasing only lobsters above 0.8 feet in length, reflects the resort’s respect for marine life and responsible harvesting practices.

Executive Housekeeper Ismail Moosa emphasized the deeper meaning behind these operational shifts: “Every small decision we make—from laundry to guest amenities—comes from a place of deep care for the environment. This is our home, and our aim is to preserve its beauty for generations to come.”

With several additional eco-initiatives under development, the resort views sustainability not as a checklist but as a continuous improvement model.
