The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) recently held high-level discussions with the British High Commission in Malé to enhance tourism cooperation and boost the Maldives’ appeal in the United Kingdom market. The meeting, which took place on Sunday, was attended by MMPRC’s Managing Director Ibrahim Shiuree and Deputy British High Commissioner to the Maldives, Mr. Toff Wahab.

The discussions focused on aligning efforts to broaden the Maldives’ tourism experiences and promote its diverse offerings to British travellers. Both parties emphasized the importance of creating collaborative avenues that support the High Commission’s public engagement initiatives while expanding market penetration in the UK. This strategic engagement also reflects the Maldives’ long-term vision to attract a more diverse and high-value tourist base through targeted marketing and partnerships.
Tourism remains a central pillar of the Maldivian economy, contributing to over two-thirds of the country’s foreign exchange earnings. As part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s economic development strategy, the government has set a national tourism target of 2.3 million international arrivals in 2025, building on the destination’s global reputation for luxury, safety, and natural beauty.
The United Kingdom continues to hold a strong position in the Maldives’ tourism source markets. With 108,371 arrivals recorded as of June 30th, the UK has become the third country to surpass the 100,000 visitor threshold this year, reaffirming the country’s consistent interest in the Maldives as a preferred long-haul destination. The UK also currently ranks as the third-largest source market for Maldivian tourism, following Russia and China.
Under the current administration, the Maldives has placed renewed emphasis on market-specific promotional campaigns, public-private partnerships, and destination diversification. MMPRC, the national tourism promotion body, has been actively expanding its reach in key international markets through roadshows, trade fairs, digital marketing, and strategic collaborations.
This latest engagement with the British High Commission reflects MMPRC’s commitment to sustaining strong diplomatic and commercial ties while advancing its mission to promote the Maldives as a leading tourism destination in Europe and beyond. With the UK market showing robust performance in the first half of the year, industry stakeholders anticipate further growth in visitor numbers through continued joint efforts in marketing and destination branding.
