The recent completion of Maafaru International Airport marks a major step forward in enhancing regional connectivity and boosting high-end tourism in Noonu Atoll. The airport, now fully operational, is expected to play a central role in expanding access to northern luxury resorts and supporting the Government of Maldives’ broader economic and infrastructural agenda under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.
At the official ceremony celebrating the airport’s completion, Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib underscored the administration’s commitment to ensuring that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) delivers measurable benefits for the Maldivian people, particularly the youth. Speaking to attendees, the Minister stressed that foreign investments must contribute not only to state revenue but also to sustainable employment and local business development.
“This government believes development must translate into real, tangible improvements in the lives of our citizens. FDI must open doors for young people across the nation, creating jobs, encouraging entrepreneurship, and supporting self-reliance,” said Dr. Muththalib.
The strategic location of Maafaru Airport enhances the appeal of Noonu Atoll, an area already attracting millions of dollars in private tourism investment. Home to several luxury resorts, the atoll has emerged as a promising destination for high-end travelers. The improved infrastructure is expected to further increase investor confidence and catalyze the development of additional tourism projects in the region.
Minister Muththalib emphasized the importance of engaging local communities in development efforts. He encouraged residents to work alongside investors and resort operators to ensure that economic growth is inclusive and community-centered. “The strength of our development lies in our people. We must ensure local participation so that every Maldivian feels the impact of national projects,” he said.
The Maafaru International Airport project aligns with the government’s policy to decentralize development and enhance regional equity. By strengthening air access to the northern atolls, the airport is expected to facilitate tourism growth beyond the central region, diversify economic activity, and provide new opportunities for youth in areas such as hospitality, transport, and services.
President Dr. Muizzu’s administration has placed infrastructure and youth empowerment at the heart of its development strategy. Through projects like Maafaru Airport, the government aims to create an enabling environment where international investments translate into long-term economic progress and meaningful job creation across the country.
As the Maldives continues to welcome growing numbers of international tourists, projects like Maafaru International Airport reflect the government’s focus on building resilient infrastructure that supports sustainable tourism and community well-being. The completion of this project is a clear indication of the administration’s active efforts to improve national connectivity, expand tourism to new regions, and ensure that economic benefits reach all corners of the archipelago.
