President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited Tuas Port today as part of his official state visit to Singapore, where he was given a comprehensive tour of what is set to become the largest fully automated port in the world upon its completion in the 2040s.

President Dr Muizzu was welcomed by senior officials from PSA International, including Mr Ong Seow Leong, Group Head of Business Development, and Mr William Goh, Vice President of the Container Division. The visit offered the President and his delegation a firsthand look at Singapore’s cutting-edge port infrastructure and the technological expertise driving its next-generation logistics operations.

The tour began with a strategic overview of Tuas Port’s conception, long-term planning, and phased development. Designed to consolidate Singapore’s container operations under a single integrated hub, Tuas Port will eventually handle 65 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) annually, making it a global benchmark for maritime logistics and efficiency.

President Dr Muizzu was taken to a bird’s eye observation point, where he witnessed the expansive layout of the port and ongoing construction activities. From there, the delegation was taken to the control centre, where real-time demonstrations showcased the port’s use of advanced digital systems and automated technologies in managing cargo movement.

Tuas Port incorporates autonomous cranes, driverless vehicles, and artificial intelligence-powered logistics planning to maximise efficiency, safety, and speed. The facility is entirely geared toward reducing manual processes and optimising container handling through a fully automated terminal management system.

PSA International executives briefed the Maldivian delegation on the role of Tuas Port in Singapore’s future economy and the long-term sustainability strategies integrated into the port’s design. Environmental features include reduced carbon emissions through smart energy management, electrified equipment, and optimisation of port space to reduce its environmental footprint.

The visit aligns with President Dr Muizzu’s broader economic development agenda, which prioritises infrastructure modernisation, maritime development, and smart logistics as part of the Maldives’ national Vision 2040 plan. With maritime trade and connectivity being essential to the island nation’s economy, exposure to large-scale logistics hubs such as Tuas Port provides strategic insights into the integration of automation, digitisation, and environmental sustainability in future port projects.

Tuas Port’s development and operational model offer valuable reference points as the Maldives seeks to enhance its own port facilities and maritime trade capabilities. The visit also underscored the importance of international partnerships and knowledge exchange, particularly with countries like Singapore, whose logistics and urban planning excellence has earned global recognition.
