His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed departed Malé 29th June 2025, Sunday afternoon for a four-day state visit to Singapore, scheduled from 29 June 2025 to 2 July 2025. The official visit, undertaken at the invitation of President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Singapore, a milestone in the longstanding and cordial ties between the two island nations.
Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Singapore were formally established on 20 February 1975. Since then, both countries have enjoyed a cooperative and friendly relationship, marked by mutual respect, frequent high-level engagements, and expanding economic ties. This golden jubilee visit underscores a shared commitment to further strengthening partnerships in key sectors.
During the visit, President Muizzu is scheduled to hold high-level talks with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, and other senior cabinet members. The discussions are expected to focus on enhancing cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, urban development, infrastructure planning, capacity-building, and multilateral diplomacy. The leaders will explore ways to leverage Singapore’s technical expertise and economic model to support the Maldives’ development priorities.
A key highlight of the visit will be the signing of several memoranda of understanding (MoUs), which are expected to formalize and expand institutional partnerships between government agencies and private sector entities of both countries. According to the President’s Office, these agreements will support ongoing efforts to modernize public services, develop human capital, and foster innovation-driven economic growth in the Maldives.
President Muizzu will also attend a Singapore-Maldives Business Forum during the visit, where he will engage with leading members of Singapore’s private sector. The forum aims to promote investment opportunities in the Maldives across sectors such as tourism, renewable energy, construction, and technology. The government’s proactive efforts to diversify the Maldivian economy and create an investor-friendly climate will be a central focus of the discussions.
In addition to state-level engagements, President Muizzu is expected to meet with members of the Maldivian diaspora residing in Singapore. This interaction reflects the administration’s strong commitment to staying connected with Maldivian communities abroad and acknowledging their role in contributing to national development.
