A major step forward in sustainable financing has been launched by the Bank of Maldives (BML), introducing ENV POS—an innovative program that transforms ordinary point-of-sale transactions into funding for environmental protection initiatives across the country. The program was officially introduced by Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, during a ceremony that highlighted the nation’s increasing focus on sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
Under the ENV POS scheme, BML will contribute a portion of its earnings from every transaction made using a BML Point of Sale (POS) terminal. Importantly, this contribution comes at no cost to the customer or merchant. This model encourages eco-conscious action without altering consumer behavior or affecting business profitability—making sustainability an integrated part of daily economic activity.
According to BML’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Mohamed Shareef, the initiative is projected to raise approximately MVR 5.5 million annually, based on the current volume of card transactions. As digital payments continue to increase nationwide, the bank expects this figure to grow correspondingly, allowing for a broader environmental impact in the years to come.
“This is not a temporary campaign. ENV POS is designed as a long-term, scalable program that grows with our customers,” Shareef explained. He urged all residents and visitors to opt for BML when making purchases, turning simple transactions into meaningful contributions to environmental conservation.
The funds generated through ENV POS will be directed toward a range of nationwide sustainability initiatives, implemented in partnership with local NGOs and development partners. Planned areas of focus include recycling infrastructure, reforestation programs, and improved waste management systems, which are critical to preserving the Maldives’ fragile ecosystems and maintaining its status as a world-class tourism destination.
With over four decades of service, Bank of Maldives is the national bank and a central pillar in the country’s financial landscape. Its extensive network of branches, ATMs, and digital services makes BML the most accessible banking option across the archipelago. The bank has consistently aligned its corporate responsibility efforts with national priorities, focusing on community empowerment, inclusive economic growth, and environmental sustainability.
For tourists visiting the Maldives, the ENV POS initiative presents an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the conservation of the islands’ pristine natural beauty, simply by making payments using a BML terminal during their stay. Each transaction directly supports the nation’s efforts to protect the environment that attracts millions of travelers to its shores each year.
As climate change continues to threaten low-lying island nations, initiatives like ENV POS highlight the Maldives’ commitment to leading by example in sustainable tourism and banking. Through innovative financial tools and public-private partnerships, the country is creating new ways for citizens and visitors alike to take part in protecting its future.
