Pakistan has announced its support for the Maldives’ ambitious Five Million Trees Programme, further strengthening the growing partnership between the two countries in environmental protection, technical development and sustainable national growth.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made the announcement in a joint statement issued by the leaders of the Maldives and Pakistan following official talks held during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit to Pakistan. The commitment reflects the close bilateral relationship between the two countries and Pakistan’s readiness to support key development priorities being advanced by the Government of Maldives.

Prime Minister Sharif said Pakistan was prepared to provide assistance to the Maldives in a number of sectors, including support for the Five Million Trees Programme. According to the joint statement, the assistance will be provided within an agreed timeframe and under arrangements to be mutually determined by the two governments.

The Five Million Trees Programme is one of the Government’s major environmental initiatives aimed at increasing greenery, strengthening climate resilience and improving the natural environment across the Maldives. For a geographically dispersed island nation highly exposed to the impacts of climate change, the programme represents an important part of broader efforts to promote environmental sustainability and protect communities for future generations.

Prime Minister Sharif also reaffirmed Pakistan’s readiness to provide technical assistance under the memoranda of understanding signed between the Maldives and Pakistan. He highlighted opportunities for greater cooperation in the technology sector, particularly as the Maldives works to establish data centres in different regions of the country.

Pakistan has developed data centre infrastructure with capacities ranging from 0.5 megawatts to 8.5 megawatts in various parts of the country, and Prime Minister Sharif expressed Pakistan’s willingness to share its experience and technical expertise with the Maldives. Such cooperation could support the Maldives’ efforts to strengthen digital infrastructure, improve government services and expand secure data capacity across the archipelago.

The Maldives and Pakistan have signed memoranda of understanding covering cooperation in 20 areas, including trade, healthcare, tourism and other fields of mutual interest. The agreements are expected to create new opportunities for institutional cooperation, knowledge sharing and economic engagement between the two countries.

The discussions during President Dr Muizzu’s state visit underline the Government’s continued efforts to expand international partnerships that can directly contribute to national development, environmental resilience, digital transformation and economic growth. The commitments announced by Pakistan are expected to further deepen the longstanding friendship between the Maldives and Pakistan while opening additional avenues for practical cooperation in the years ahead.
