A steady influx of international visitors during the traditionally quieter early June period has reaffirmed the Maldives’ growing reputation as a year-round travel destination. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the country welcomed 72,352 tourists in the first fifteen days of June 2025, a 22.8% increase compared to the same period last year. This notable rise in arrivals marks one of the most substantial early-June growth rates in recent years, underscoring strong off-season performance and sustained international interest in the Maldives.
The positive momentum builds upon a successful May, during which tourist arrivals also saw a healthy year-on-year increase of 13.1%. With this continued upward trend, the Maldives has already surpassed the one million visitor milestone for the year by mid-June, a strong indication of the effectiveness of national tourism strategies and market resilience amid global fluctuations.
China remains the top source market for 2025 so far, with over 125,000 arrivals, representing 12.1% of total visitors. Russia follows with 116,504 tourists, while the United Kingdom holds third place with 103,593 arrivals. These three markets continue to be key contributors to Maldives tourism, reflecting the government’s ongoing efforts to maintain strong ties and consistent marketing presence in these regions.
Currently, the Maldives boasts over 64,000 operational beds across 1,203 registered tourist facilities. Resorts continue to play a central role in the sector, offering nearly 72% of the total accommodation capacity. Guesthouses account for around 23%, while the remaining capacity is distributed among safari vessels and hotels. The diversity in accommodation types—ranging from ultra-luxury resorts to budget-friendly guesthouses, has allowed the Maldives to appeal to a broader range of travelers, from honeymooners and high-end tourists to backpackers and family vacationers.
This off-season growth coincides with several strategic initiatives by the Maldivian government to enhance tourism promotion, improve accessibility, and diversify source markets. The Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with Visit Maldives and other stakeholders, has intensified marketing campaigns in key international markets, including participation in major global travel fairs, digital advertising, and influencer collaborations. Additionally, efforts to improve regional air connectivity and ease of travel have contributed to increased accessibility, particularly for emerging markets.
The increase in June arrivals, during the Southwest Monsoon season, typically considered an off-peak period, signals increasing resilience and adaptability of the destination to attract tourists year-round. However, industry experts note that while resorts maintain consistent occupancy rates, guesthouse bookings remain more sensitive to pricing and flight connectivity. Sustaining this growth will likely depend on further airlift expansion, continued government-backed promotions, and stable global economic trends.
As the Maldives continues to refine its tourism strategy, including sustainable development, digital transformation, and local community engagement, the destination is well-positioned to maintain its competitive edge in a dynamic global travel landscape. The latest data reflects not only the country’s enduring appeal but also the proactive measures taken by the government and industry stakeholders to keep the Maldives at the forefront of global tourism.
