In a heartfelt celebration of global environmental milestones, Sun Siyam Iru Fushi hosted its annual Eco Week – Celebrating Our Planet, offering guests a rich array of interactive, nature-focused experiences. Designed to promote environmental stewardship and community engagement, the event highlighted the resort’s deep-rooted commitment to sustainability and conservation, aligning with global observances like World Reef Awareness Day, World Environment Day, and World Ocean Day.
Held on the pristine island of Noonu Atoll, this year’s Eco Week combined environmental education, hands-on activities, and immersive adventures, inviting both guests and staff to participate in meaningful efforts that support the health of marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
Reefs, Roots, and Responsibility
The week opened with a guided conservation snorkelling session and reef clean-up led by the resort’s resident marine biologist. Guests had the unique opportunity to explore the resort’s vibrant house reef while directly contributing to its preservation by removing debris and learning about reef health.
On World Environment Day, guests joined a tree-planting event, adding to the lush vegetation of the island while symbolizing their personal commitment to the planet. This was followed by an island nature walk, offering insights into the island’s diverse flora and fauna and showcasing the importance of protecting native plant life.
World Ocean Day was marked by a coral restoration workshop at Waters Edge Beach, where participants assisted in planting coral fragments as part of the resort’s long-term reef rehabilitation program. The day culminated with a sunset documentary screening focused on coral reef ecosystems, followed by a mesmerizing night snorkelling experience that revealed the reef’s nocturnal wonders.
Impact Through Action: Measurable Progress

Sun Siyam Iru Fushi’s commitment to sustainability is far more than symbolic. Through its Sun Siyam Cares initiative, the resort has implemented impactful eco-projects across the island:
-
126 new trees have been planted across the island in 2025.
-
18 coral frames have been installed in the surrounding lagoon to aid reef restoration.
-
The resort has significantly reduced single-use plastics by replacing plastic water bottles with glass and launching an in-house bottling plant.
-
Educational sustainability experiences are integrated into guest activities, ensuring that every visit contributes to awareness and action.
Engaging Communities and Protecting Heritage
Beyond environmental efforts, Sun Siyam Iru Fushi actively supports local schools and communities, conducting awareness sessions to instill environmental responsibility in future generations. This dual focus—on both environmental and social sustainability—reflects the core philosophy of Sun Siyam Resorts, which operates across the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
The Sun Siyam Cares programme focuses on four key pillars: reducing energy and water consumption, minimizing plastic waste, investing in renewable energy, and supporting local livelihoods and culture. These values are embedded in every aspect of the resort’s operations, ensuring that guests not only enjoy an exceptional holiday but also leave with a sense of purpose and connection to the natural world.
An Invitation to Travel Consciously
Sun Siyam Iru Fushi is not only a luxury escape in the heart of the Indian Ocean, it’s a destination that empowers travelers to become part of a broader sustainability movement. By integrating eco-conscious practices into daily resort life and inviting guests to participate in conservation, the resort sets a powerful example of how tourism can contribute positively to the environment and local communities.
