A remarkable performance by the Maldives women’s under-16 basketball team earned them the bronze medal in the FIBA U16 Asia Cup South Asia Qualifiers 2025, following a dominant 86-22 victory against Bangladesh in the third-place playoff held in Malé.
The match took place on Sunday afternoon at the Youth Centre Indoor Court, where the Maldivian team showcased exceptional skill, coordination, and defensive strength from the opening whistle. Demonstrating a well-prepared strategy and high-level execution, the team surged ahead with a 23-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, effectively setting the tone for the rest of the game. By halftime, the Maldives had extended their advantage to a staggering 61-1, effectively securing control of the court.
Despite a slightly more competitive third quarter in which Bangladesh managed to register 9 points, the Maldivian squad maintained its rhythm and composure. The match concluded with the Maldives sealing an emphatic 86-22 win, confirming their position as the third-best team in the South Asia region.
One of the standout athletes of the tournament was Mariyam Kaileen Shiruhaan, who delivered an outstanding individual performance, scoring 30 points in the bronze medal game alone. Her consistent scoring and on-court leadership have been a key factor in the team’s successful campaign.
The FIBA U16 Asia Cup South Asia Qualifiers, hosted in the capital city of Malé, brought together youth teams from across the region to compete for a place in the main Asia Cup tournament. Teams from countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and the Maldives participated in the qualifiers, which served not only as a pathway to the continental championship but also as a platform to promote youth engagement and women’s participation in sports across the region.
Although India ultimately secured qualification to the FIBA U16 Women’s Asia Cup, the Maldives’ third-place finish highlights the country’s growing presence in the regional basketball scene, particularly in women’s youth development. This result is a promising indicator of the potential and talent being nurtured within the Maldivian basketball program.
Hosting an international tournament of this scale also brought valuable exposure to the Maldives’ capacity to organize regional sports events and provided young athletes with critical competitive experience. The success of the Maldivian team will likely inspire further investment in grassroots sports and help encourage more girls to pursue athletics.
With this achievement, the Maldives not only celebrates a sporting milestone but also strengthens its image as a vibrant and youth-driven destination, where sports and tourism thrive hand in hand.
