At the heart of the Maldives’ world-renowned hospitality experience lies the dedication of the people who shape it. This message was powerfully echoed by the Minister of Finance and Planning, Moosa Zameer, during his keynote address at the Hotelier Maldives Awards 2025, held on Saturday evening at the elegant Barceló Nasandhura Malé.
Serving as the Chief Guest at the prestigious event, Minister Zameer underscored the importance of investing in human capital as a driving force for the continued success of the nation’s tourism sector. He described tourism as the “bedrock of the Maldivian economy” and emphasized that the government’s strategic focus remains not just on infrastructure and revenue, but on the people, the thousands of professionals who bring the country’s iconic guest experiences to life every day.
The Hotelier Maldives Awards, presented by Bestbuy Maldives (BBM) and organised by Hotelier Maldives, is the only national recognition platform for tourism professionals in the Maldives. Now in its second year, the 2025 edition drew more than 450 nominations and over 600,000 public votes, reflecting strong public interest and industry-wide engagement.
Minister Zameer spoke passionately about the need for the hospitality industry to centre its growth strategies around talent, culture, and leadership. “Infrastructure is important, design matters, but it is talent, culture, and leadership that truly define guest experiences,” he stated. He urged tourism operators to continue investing in training, mentorship, and inclusive work environments, especially for youth and women, as the government works to expand long-term career pathways in the sector.
Highlighting the role of policy in enabling sustainable growth, the minister reaffirmed that the Maldives remains open to international investment and innovation in tourism. He noted that economic stability, transparent governance, and policy continuity are key priorities of the administration to ensure that private enterprise, especially in tourism — continues to thrive.
“The Maldives is not just a destination of beauty; it is a hub of opportunity,” Zameer said. “We are committed to strengthening public finance and infrastructure while maintaining an open environment for partnerships that uplift both people and the economy.”
In a moment of tribute, Minister Zameer also recognised the four recipients of the Dedicated Service Award for their long-standing commitment to the hospitality industry:
-
Mohamed Hashim (Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma)
-
Mohamed Fuad (Bandos Maldives)
-
Ali Rasheed Adam (Villa Resorts)
-
Hussain Manikfaan, honoured following his retirement after an exceptional 50-year career in the sector.
The ceremony was attended by professionals across various branches of the hospitality industry, including front office, culinary, engineering, and resort management. It served as both a celebration of excellence and a call to action for the industry to continue evolving with its people at the centre.
For foreign tourists, the awards serve as a powerful reminder that the Maldives’ reputation for outstanding service is not accidental. It is the result of intentional investment in people, ongoing training, and a deep-rooted culture of hospitality. Behind every luxurious villa and pristine beach experience is a team of dedicated professionals committed to delivering authentic, high-quality service.
As tourism continues to drive the economy, the message is clear: the Maldives is not only a place to visit, it is a destination that values its people as much as its natural beauty. With continued collaboration between government, local stakeholders, and global investors, the country aims to remain a leading force in sustainable, people-first tourism.
