Tourist arrivals from India are steadily climbing once again, signaling renewed interest among Indian travelers in the Maldives as a preferred holiday destination. According to official statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism, a total of 54,257 Indian tourists visited the Maldives as of 28 May 2025, registering a 3% year-on-year increase compared to the same period in 2024, when the figure stood at 52,708.
This upward trend marks the first notable recovery in Indian arrivals following last year’s downturn. Tourism authorities credit this improvement to a series of strategic initiatives launched to reengage the Indian market, a segment that has consistently ranked among the top five source markets for the Maldives in recent years.
Abdulla Ghiyas, Chairperson of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), confirmed that the rise in Indian arrivals is closely linked to intensified destination marketing efforts across India. As part of these efforts, MMPRC is currently running eight focused tourism promotion campaigns throughout various Indian cities and digital platforms. These campaigns highlight the Maldives’ unique offerings, from its luxury overwater villas and pristine beaches to its expanding segment of wellness retreats and adventure activities, tailored to the evolving travel preferences of Indian holidaymakers.
Ghiyas further noted that MMPRC is working closely with Indian and regional airlines to enhance air connectivity. This includes ongoing negotiations to increase direct flight frequencies as well as introduce new carriers to the route, making the Maldives more accessible from major Indian metropolitan hubs such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Chennai.
The renewed marketing strategy also includes high-profile celebrity endorsements to resonate with Indian audiences. Bollywood icon Katrina Kaif, widely recognized across South Asia, has been enlisted as a brand ambassador to promote the Maldives as a dream vacation spot. Her involvement is expected to significantly amplify the visibility of the destination among young urban Indian travelers, a demographic that continues to drive outbound tourism from India.
India’s importance to the Maldivian tourism sector was also recently highlighted when the one-millionth tourist to visit the country in 2025 was an Indian national, an encouraging milestone that reflects the enduring appeal of the Maldives within the Indian market.
Looking ahead, Maldives tourism authorities have set an ambitious target of welcoming between 200,000 and 300,000 Indian tourists in 2025. With tourism accounting for over a quarter of the Maldives’ GDP, strengthening ties with India, a country with one of the world’s fastest-growing outbound tourism markets, remains a top priority.
Indian travelers, particularly honeymooners, families, and luxury-seeking millennials, continue to see the Maldives as a top-tier destination offering privacy, safety, and world-class hospitality. With sustained promotional efforts and improved connectivity, the Maldives is well-positioned to reclaim its spot as a favored getaway for Indian tourists.
